    I have a jailbroken iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0.1.
Everytime I try to restore it, when it gets to verifying software, it gives me the error saying "iPhone software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable", its been like this for over 3 days now.
    Someone help!

    Questions:

What version are you trying to restore to?

Did you ever manually modify your settings to point to Saurik's server instead of Apple's during the restore process?

Enter DFU mode: With iP4 plugged into iTunes via USB

    1. Power off device.
    2. Hold power and home for 10 seconds.
    3. Release power and continue holding home for 10 seconds.
    4. iTunes will prompt for restore.
    5. Press restore device with 4.0.1.

i am trying to restore to 4.0.1 back to factory settings.
i dont understand the second question.

if i enter DFU mode, and it prompts me to restore, but itunes still doesnt get pass the verification, will i be stuck with a brick iphone 4?

I already downloaded the official 4.0.1 software directly from Apple iTunes.
the problem is that it doesnt get pass the verification and gives me that error.

i think your second question is the key to finding the solution, because when i jailbroke my iphone 4 with jailbreakme.com, i had it connected to the sync cable.
was i suppose to unplug it from my computer?
if it really has directed to saurik's server, how do i redirect to apple's?

I had this happen to me once, and was able to finally get it to restore by installing a program called Hotspot Shield on my PC. Then with it running, I opened iTunes and it got past the verification process. I didn't think it would work when I read about it, but after trying different things for 5 hours I finally gave it a try, and was surprised that it worked.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

The reason I asked is, if you were "downgrading" to a previous version, you would need your iTunes pointing to Saurik's server. Don't worry about it.

You could try reinstalling iTunes if none of the other suggestions works out.
