Hi,

I have an iphone 3gs running 3.1.2 and my home computer is running windows xp sp3 with itunes 9.0.2. I had internet tethering working by installing "mms and tethering settings" from the sinfuliphone repo from cydia and I was able to tether to my pc using both 3g/edge and wifi over a usb connection. I had to reinstall windows xp and now my tethering does not work. When I turn on tethering I get a message saying "fatal error during install" for the apple mobile device ethernet driver and the driver fails to install. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling itunes as well as just the apple mobile device installer itself. I have itunnel but I want to figure out why normal tethering from my phone (without the use of itunnel) does not work. Just to emphasize that it was working until I reinstalled windows xp. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

On some machines I plug in my iPhone with tethering turned on and nothing happens. Found out that if I install the junefabricks pdanet desktop client then the computer recognizes the iPhone as an Internet mobile device.

I just tried that and it didn't work. There is something wrong with the apple mobile device ethernet driver. I don't want to use pdanet or itunnel, I just want to be able to tether without any additional software. It was working until I had to reinstall windows xp and I have no idea how to fix it. Any ideas? I've tried all the usual (reboot, restore, reinstall itunes, etc...).

That is not an option so I need to get it working with XP. It was working before. That's why it's so frustrating.

It has something to do with the iPhone driver installed on your computer, not an iPhone issue.
See if you can delete and reinstall it thru device manager.
