I posted a week or so back that I was trying to decide between the N7 and the new Mini. I would really like to get one of those for Xmas. I should say I will be getting one of those. If the Mini is retina the decision is made for me. If it's not, the decision is still made... N7.

I can't think of 1 valid excuse for the Mini not being retina.

Same here. If it's rMini I am buying, if isn't it's N7. I hope it will be rMini, because I want iOS audio apps. I cannot imagine they don't release rMini this year. It would be crazy.

iPad mini release date - November 2, 2012

Nexus 7 release date - September 2013 (Cellular) or July 2013 (WiFi)

Kindle Fire HDX release date - October/November/December 2013 depending on model.

Yeah, I would certainly hope that tablets released almost a year or more after the iPad mini would beat it in specs. I guess when apple releases a product now it needs to beat the specs of products that will be released 11+ months later to keep customers happy.

where did you hear this?

Right we are talking about a NEW iPad mini and the expectations. Just using the current specs to compare because if they don't update to Retina....that will be how you can compare screens.

As for the Touch ID and A7, see this page:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5949?viewlocale=en_US

Secure Enclave

Touch ID does not store any images of your fingerprint. It stores only a mathematical representation of your fingerprint. It isn't possible for your actual fingerprint image to be reverse-engineered from this mathematical representation. iPhone 5s also includes a new advanced security architecture called the Secure Enclave within the A7 chip, which was developed to protect passcode and fingerprint data. Fingerprint data is encrypted and protected with a key available only to the Secure Enclave. Fingerprint data is used only by the Secure Enclave to verify that your fingerprint matches the enrolled fingerprint data. The Secure Enclave is walled off from the rest of A7 and as well as the rest of iOS. Therefore, your fingerprint data is never accessed by iOS or other apps, never stored on Apple servers, and never backed up to iCloud or anywhere else. Only Touch ID uses it and it can't be used to match against other fingerprint databases.

Indeed, but you can't compare devices that were just released to something that hasn't been announced (even though we know it's coming sooner or later). To say apple needs to step their game up because it's embarrassing that devices released a year later have better screens than the mini, is a little unfair. How do you expect something to compete with the specs of devices 11+ months later. Obviously the tech world moves very fast, I would hope that competitors would better the mini's specs, especially so far after release. Wait and see what the new mini has to offer before you call the old mini's screen an "embarrassment" Last time I checked there were no "retina" displays in 7"-8" tablets in 2012... not in the nexus, not in the mini, not in the kindle fire, not in any of them. The mini screen is not "embarrassing" because it is bettered a year after it was released IMO...

As to the touch id, yes it uses the secure enclave, but nothing that I have seen says that requires an A7... I'm sure that apple could revise the A6 as they have done with the releases of the A5X or A6X to add a secure enclave if they wanted. They could probably even add the A7 to the mini if they want to turn it into a "flagship" device.

Although I can agree that I don't think touch ID is as beneficial on an iPad. Most people probably don't use passcodes on their iPads, and when you use an iPad the home button is not the first thing you touch and your hands don't rest on the area. Most people use smart covers, which kind of conflicts with the use of touch id imo.

Once again, if you read the article, that is not even the issue under consideration here.

But since so many people haven't read it: the question isn't if; the question (at least according to this source; feel free to disagree with their underlying assumptions, but that is a different topic) is when, i.e., whether they will keep the refreshed full-size iPad and iPad mini launches together.

but, but it says Retina iPad mini might not ship... so that means we won't get it. After all this site called "mac RUMORS" posts pure facts. All articles tell us exactly what apple will release, and are never wrong. There is no way these can be rumors, I mean this device hasn't been announced yet, but apple is completely screwed because they aren't going retina and all of the competitors are. Even though that's not what the article is about, hey it's FACT!!!:p

It's not that they can't

Apple has the display tech IGZO to fix both battery concerns and retina iPad mini, it has nothing to do with ability, it's all about cost... Apple is now being ran by a supply guy, who wants to make as much money as possible instead of leading the market in innovation. Apple missed a huge opportunity with the iPhone 5s by not putting the IGZO display in(my understanding is there where supply demand issues, they couldn't manufacture IGZO for iPads and still manufacture enough for the iPhones, and the iPhone 5c was designed to take the heat off the 5s, in hopes they could add the IGZO display to the 5s, but thy decided to go with the finger print sensor instead of the display for two reasons, cost of adding both, and a need to find a product to add finger print scanning to. So, iPad gets the new display and the phone gets the finger print sensor). I see no reason, unless they are supply issues with the new display on the mini. But we can definitely see it on the new iPad 5, and it should be smoking fast with the new series 6 GPU(350 million Poly per sec, around the same as the xbox 360) It's just a shame it has taken apple so long to get here... Btw, with the acquisition of Nokia by Microsoft(Nokia owns patents for a lot of really cool tech), Apple doesn't have long, unless they find an innovative leader who isn't afraid of selling out of a product early to provide better tech... If a product is good enough people will hold out until they can get one...

They really can't afford to release a non-retina ipad mini, IMHO.

The competition is catching up quickly and, right now the only thing Apple has in their favor is the ecosystem, but that will only last so long.

A new 64-bit A7X/M7 and other stuff on the full sized ipad and possibly the A5X or the A6X on the retina ipad mini. The a5x wasn't great on a full sized ipad, but it should be enough to drive a retina mini efficiently. Ideally we'd get the A6X. That would be a killer on the ipad mini...

What do you guys think will happen to the ipad 2 and 4. The 2 will most certainly be discontinued this year and probably the 4 as well, which would make an A6X powered mini retina have some sense.

I think we'll see the A7X in the next iPad mini. If I were apple, I would try to get developers to develop for 64 bit immediately.

Considering no one even had a complaint about the ipad mini other than the omission of a retina display it would be complete madness for it to remain as is.

Retina is coming to the mini for sure and you'll be sure to see the stock collapse if the announcement doesn't come in october, and it'd be a valid concern for a company that used to make great decisions.

With apple having a massive stock pile of money, any hardware designers, coders and innovators their hearts could ever want, why are they behind companies that are only trying to pre-empt apples next move. How is that happening? apple need to realise they have to over offer to beat the competition that is still out doing them with no where near the resources or money behind them?!

yeah they missed a huge opportunity... what were they thinking??? I mean they only sold 9 million iPhones over the weekend... but man, they missed out huge. So many people are obviously furious about not having a new display that nobody is buying the new phone. Yet somehow apple managed to sell 9 million of them.... but ya, people are really agitated about not having the new IGZO display, apple really missed the mark here.

People are unreal... just because some tech nerd on a website wishes apple added a feature, does not mean they missed the mark. I'm pretty sure the 5S broke a lot of sales records, so for you to call it a big miss and huge disappointment is a bit ignorant to be honest.

It's a shame that it has taken apple so long to get where???

I'm sure apple is soooo worried about Microsoft and their 3% market share! Obviously if you look at sales, I don't think a lot of people are holding out on the latest Samsung and Apple phones in favor of "waiting for a better product" like you claim. The new nokia might have a better camera, but how many people are waiting in line to pick that phone up??? Ya none.

and if you read the article, it has nothing to do with whether or not the iPad will come with a retina display. The article is about whether the new mini will release at the same time as the next full size iPad or whether apple will release each at a different time. In fact, the article specifically states that

"it is estimated that Apple's Asia-based supply chain of manufacturers have begun the start of Retina iPad mini display production, but have not entered a mass production stage of the upcoming tablet."

So I don't know why people are wasting their time arguing that apple is blowing it, and they are so far behind the competition because they aren't going to have a retina display when the article says nothing to corroborate that, and in fact is the complete opposite. People these days, read a headline and think that they know what an entire article is about... Sad to be honest.

To say 9 million iPhones was a huge accomplishment, when Apple has never had an open market in china as well as most of Asia before. There estimates internally were for something like 12 million altogether with the sales of iPhone 5s and 5c, 9 million is an impressive number, and even more so, when you figure no one had really even used or reviewed the device. Battery life is now a huge disadvantage for apple. 10 hrs vs 17 for s4 or 24 for the htc one, I'd say the IGZO not being in the new iPhone is huge mistake, with 2.5x battery life improvement, that would give the device somewhere in the ball park of 30-40 hrs... I'm not saying the device isn't good, we've been promised series 6 gpu for the last 2 generations of iPads, but it has been considered a non-issue because
It's still "better" than the competition. Mobile computing on the whole is close to the cloud computing line(the point at which devices need not be any faster when connecting to the cloud). 64 bit archs are technically where most people draw the line, but with the roadmap given by ARMH I'd say it's the 2nd 64bit gen, with a modified version of the series 6 GPU. Apple is going in a good direction, but people are being over charged for the tech they are getting, and it's a shame because Steve jobs prided himself on giving people the best possible tech for which they could offer. That montra had been changed with this new management, and with the loss of Scott Forstall I'm afraid they are headed for profits over quality. I'm not saying apple isn't a good company and I do enjoy there devices, but when you know what's on the horizon and what they are not offering, it makes what they are a bit disappointing... And btw Microsoft might not have a huge portion of market right now, but I see them as a huge competitor now that they have the Nokia phone development team, which owns the rights to a lot of patents one of which is for graphene... To be as big as fan as you are, you can't focus on the past, you have to look at what they are working on now... And you might now believe it, but there are a lot of developers that are angry with apple, when your promised a certain level of performance and you don't get it, it makes it hard to release your app when it doesn't work with the hardware... Now we finally have the hardware we were promised a year ago, it's sad because a lot of these startup app developers couldn't survive without profit for a year... Case in point infinity blade dungeons...

12 million internally... do you have a source on that? I'm pretty sure apple has never released what their sales estimates are, so I want to know how you think they were at 12 million? Because analyst estimates were much lower in the 4-5million range, some of the highest estimates said 6 million, and apple came through and sold 9. Where did you hear 12??

Your battery claims are a complete lie...

Web browsing on WiFi, the 5S beats out the HTC One, and the Galaxy S4...
58203.png

Over 4G LTE, the iPhone 5S fairs even better beating out all of the other phones tested....
58202.png

not sure where you are claiming 17 and 24 hours of battery life for the S4 and HTC One, when they actually have worse battery life than the iPhone 5S over both wifi and 4G.

Promised series 6 gpus?? I'm curious, who promised you those? Apple doesn't ever comment on products that aren't released, so how did they promise you a series 6 gpu for 2 years????

Again, the hardware we were promised a year ago? Who promises you this hardware?? Reading articles on a RUMOR site, or analyst PREDICTIONS, does not equate to a promise.

I'm sorry but you are completely wrong, even under steve jobs, apple did not always provide the most bang for the buck. Macs have always carried a cost premium over PC's. You could always build a windows computer for less than the equivalent mac, but you would not get the wonderful software, and the great hardware that come with buying a mac. This would cost a premium, so for you to say that now they don't care about giving customers the most bang for their buck is just flat out wrong. Apple has never cared about that. They have always been about having good profit margins, and they have not been about having the best specs.

Good grief, what are they waiting on?

And there better be GPS in the non-LTE version, too.

What if Apple doesn't make the mini Retina, due to the iPad 5 having smaller bezels and a lighter design. Seems the gap between the two models is smaller if the fat-trimmed iPad 5 model pans out.

Seriously considered that for a second, but I'm leaning towards 'Yes, they'll make it', although I have to say, with that reportedly sleeker form-factor of the iPad5, for me the Mini is no longer a foregone conclusion now. Like to check out the width of the 5, for one-handed holding. Might prefer the larger iPad5 after all.

I can't - Touch ID should be even more useful on the iPad than on the iPhone for one simple feature - multiple user profiles. Android's tablet version has this and Apple needs to add it to the iPad version of iOS 7 alongside the new iPads at launch. This feature in combination with all the desktop level 64 bit architecture and expected increased RAM and storage capacities now being up to 128GB, this would allow it to completely replace the "typical" family home desktop PC. All it would need is a bluetooth keyboard, really, with the advent of the host of cloud services out there, including Apple's own offerings...

And when I say typical, I mean consumption of media, web browsing, email, social networking, gaming, and light productivity (doing your homework, school research, family finances, home movie creation, etc. - not enterprise level databasing and complex Excel use cases). Typically mom and dad have their work computers, whilst Sally and Joe, unless they are into tech, don't want much more than to Instagram and Facebook and spend hours playing games and iMessaging friends back and forth - then just fire up the Apple TV and AirPlay when it is time to watch a family film together...

For me, I think it would really make the full sized iPad even more of a killer in terms of eating away the PC - and is the perfect use case for a larger 11-13" version - the home desktop of the iPad line.

After last year's... fiasco is the wrong word, but maybe embarrassment of announcing a whole slew of product updates and then having constrained supplies heading into the holiday season, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Apple holds off announcing anything it can't meet expected demand for.

If the iPad Mini is going to be manufacturing-constrained, Q1 is much more reasonable.
at this point I think the "supply constrained" line is utter nonsense. Every other computer/smartphone/tablet manufacturer doesn't have the issues that Apple does. And Apple is more vertically integrated than any other competitor.
It's just a PR tactic. What surprises me is not that Apple does it. Rather that the media, and the Apple community eat it up.

The only comparable time I can recall other manufacturers ever citing "supply constrained"was after the Thailand flooding which literally swamped hard drive manufacturing for a good 6 months at every hard drive make on the planet.
Prior to that it was the "math problem" Pentiums.

I almost wish there was an an enterprise/educational version of the Ipad simply for the feature of multiple user profiles.
We have our different sales departments, marketing and promo departments sharing ipads. I dont know why, because an ipad is cheap compared to a laptop, I guess upper mgmt still thinks of Apple products as shiny toys, not tools. They balked when we specced an iMac for the audio dept this year! I had to do a sit down to detail the things that make the imac not a toy. (and I used to be an imac hater!)

As far as cloud, it is not a panacea. You are still dependent on having a robust network connection. And plenty of wireless carriers are throttling speeds, or limiting monthly access past a set amount. Even home ISPs are throttling certain types of data.
I rely on cloud stuff only for lightweight things like bookmarks, contacts and smaller text and spreadsheet docs.

you are assuming that we will get user profiles. Since they were not released with iOS 7, and there has been no hint of user profiles either through the rumor mill or devs going through the source code, I am pretty sure we won't be getting separate user profiles in iOS 7.

I wouldn't have thought that a retina display would be such a popular request. To me the display is pretty good as is. Of course retina would be nice but not if it means other areas will be compromised.
If they managed to get an A7 processor, 2GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in there, now THAT would really get me excited.

If you read the article, you would see that they ARE going to have a retina display according to this source, the article is simply questioning whether the new iPad mini will ship at the same time as the full size iPad 5, or if apple will stagger their releases due to supply problems.

Jeeze, relax buddy. I did read the article. The point of my post was not to argue whether or not they will be retina. Instead I was trying to say that personally I find other features more important such as processor speed, memory and storage space.

I am relaxed, thanks. I think you are the one who could relax, getting uptight over nothing.

Alright, I'll try and relax even more.

But it wasn't "nothing" to me. I just registered and wrote my very first words on here only to get accused of not understanding the article. It just wasn't the warm sort of welcoming reception I would have appreciated.
Anyways, forget about it. I will relax now. Fully relax...

There are really only two options concerning the upcoming iPad announcement:

1. Apple announce a new full-size iPad and a new iPad mini, both available in a week or two.

2. Apple announce a new full-size iPad. They say nothing about the mini.

There is no way on earth Apple would announce a new iPad mini but not make it available until next Jan or whenever, that would totally kill mini sales for the holidays! Any analyst who suggests that's a possibility doesn't have a clue and has never paid any attention to how Apple operates. If the new mini isn't ready to ship now then it won't be announced. It will be announced when it is ready to ship and not before.

the original article doesn't suggest that the new mini will not be retina (in fact, it suggests the opposite) so I'm puzzled by a lot of comments here. I think pretty much everybody predicts that it will be retina. the recent leaks pretty effectively nail this shut too.

regarding the timing of the mini refresh I doubt it will come much later than that of the Ipad 5. We are already seeing multiple parts leaks for the new mini, like this one. Those don't usually show up in numbers until the production ramps up. If Apple is having trouble ramping it up quickly enough they may try to artificially delay the launch a bit like they did with 5S (and for the same reason too) by not allowing preorders. But it will be this year for sure.

Apple really needs to go back to spreading product launches throughout the whole year. cramming so many of them in just a couple of months is bound to create supply chain problems as already happened with 5S. It will not be surprising if this happens again with the mini and/or ipad 5 and who knows what else.
