While deciding between a Gen 1 vs. 2 for my first iPad, thinness/weight wasn't much of a factor as well, as I was planning to protect either one with an Otterbox.

I feel better about my choice after reading some comments of this post, but also do acknowledge that future apps may test my iPad 1.

But for now, I'm quite pleased with the iPad (1) experience.

I find safari to be much faster on the 2. Also it is much easier to handle. This makes a big difference as you are holding it anytime you are using it.

Like a previous poster said you will really start to see a major difference between the iPad 1 and iPad 2 when some of the newer apps taking advantage of the additional processing power come out. There are already a few out there that really show the power of the iPad 2. One that I have experienced 1st hand is Realracing2 HD. This game is absolutely awesome on the iPad 2 with great graphics and game play. If you use this same app on the ipad 1 the graphics are not anywhere as impressive and it crashes all the time because the iPad 1 processor can not handle the load. As we move forward you will see more and more issues like this with new apps when trying to use them on the iPad 1.
