The pandemic and wearing a mask is just another reason having both Face ID and Underscreen Touch ID would be useful
It’s time for Apple to put all the patents they have on underscreen Touch ID to use

Now, this I agree with, I do think that having touch ID ‘under the display‘ may not necessarily be superior to face ID, but it’s an alternative to face ID, which we know Apple previously experimented with in the R&D phase before Face ID launched in 2017. Now that we’re living in a new world, having both options only makes sense, but it really comes down to, does Apple believe having two forms of biometric security is necessary? (Yup, that’s a rhetorical question.) At this point, I don’t think they will, but they should consider it, given C/19 has forever changed the world we live in and our communities around us.

It's funny to see the small group of posters (not only on this site) who are strongly against Apple bringing back TouchID. I mean, I'm glad that these people are looking out for Apple's profitability, but I've never seen a feature like this be so polarizing on message boards.

Usually you see it on features that would negatively impact battery life or introduce other potential downsides. These people are against it because the PPC on their Pro Max would go from $490 to $493.

If they add it to supplement Faceid that's fine because I'll never use it. If they intend to replace Faceid with it I'd be very disappointed and would purchase the most current Faceid phone at the time the phase out would take place and keep it until the phone dies.

exactly must be those users who are being a sheep.

if they put that feature, it is not a requirement for them not to use faceID

there are a lot of benefits for touchID but the list of benefits is longer now during the pandemic which definitely wont go away soon not even a year.

I'm the opposite (and probably in the vast minority here): I'd prefer to have an in-screen fingerprint reader, and do away with the wide notch (replaced with a small teardrop notch or holepunch in the top centre of the screen). Shame Apple can't manufacture both phones to allow a person to select which they prefer, but I can dream!!!

Here’s the thing, I would only want an in -display fingerprint reader if it’s actually ready for full implementation, not some shotty released product that semi works. We know the technology is there, but if it’s not {reliable and consistent}, then why release something in the first place if it can’t Offer an intuitive user experience. So the technology has to be refined enough, where Apple releases it, which easily could be two more years or longer.

Fair point. From my (limited) use of phones which have in-display readers (OP7, Samsung A50) they (for me) work well enough, though (much like touch and face id), you get some users who it doesn't work well for.

That would be nice, but inherently all the optical fingerprint sensors are not up to TouchID performance yet imo. I've tried various Samsung, Oppo, etc, and the fail rate is just not low enough. Huawei's is probably one of the best, but imo even that is not even as reliable as Huawei's own capacitive one. Haven't tried the ultrasonic ones, but seems like those have other flaws. The capacitive sensors are still the gold standard.

Maybe Apple would come up with a really great under-display fingerprint sensor (I can already hear it, Magic TouchID....), but until that happens I don't think Apple would do it. Imo Apple doesn't feel the need to release a fingerprint sensor that is worse than TouchID (while FaceID itself is already more secure).

Under the screen would be nice for when FaceID fails. I’d rather fallback to TouchID before resorting to a passcode.

The problem is that the tech hasn’t proven reliable at this point. So I’d settle for it being on the side or the back of the device.

Having both options works for most people because you could choose one of the two, use both (MFA), use FaceID with TouchID as a fallback, use just passcode or use nothing at all.

If the notch is your problem... well I guess the iPhone is not for you. I hope they eventually get rid of it, but don’t find it a big enough problem to complain about.

Yes i have noticed the minority who are strongly against touch id returning on macrumours also. They have piped down big time now though, considering apples newest released phone has touch id. Anyway Apple will definitely be releasing under touch id in near future (e.g rumours of it on next ipad air 4 and possibly 2020 pro max). Knowing Apple, they will only release it when its perfected and not finicky to use e.g galaxy s20.

I would love for them to bring back touch ID. FaceID rarely works for me in the sun so I end up spinning in circles to find the right angle. Also, after talking on the phone in the car the default is the screen being locked. So every time I hang up the phone I have to grab the phone, put it in front of my face and unlock it. Before I just reached down and put my thumb on it. The latter is much safer and much less annoying. I've never liked FaceID but I understand why some people do prefer it. Mask wearing has added another issue.

This is why I love Android's smart lock feature. Apple seriously needs to implement that.

Yea loved that feature on my GS8+. And if iPhone would do irises, a mask would be a non issue. I loved iris scan on Android. Face for me was always crappy. Iris didn't ever fail that I can remember.

Personally, I never use that feature on my Android phone. I mean maybe if you don't use your phone number for anything, but in reality, I'm not going to risk my phone unlocking without my knowledge just because I happened to have my bluetooth headphone nearby. The risk is too great for unnecessary convenience.

The phone doesn't unlock without your knowledge. It just doesn't lock, unless you lock it manually. If it's locked, you still have to unlock it. Once out of range with BT device, it locks automatically.

I only use it in my car. And occasionally with my smartwatch. I don't see it as any major risk.

Times like this where people are wearing masks is A perfect example of how useful this would be

So let’s say I use smart lock to make my phone not lock when my smart watch is nearby.

I then leave my phone on my desk at work and walk to the tea-point, which is out of sight of my desk, but not out of Bluetooth range. Does my phone remain unlocked even though I can no longer see it?

Yes I will remain unlocked until either...........

it loses connection with your smartwatch
or
you manually lock it before leaving it out of sight

It doesn’t sound like it would be terribly useful to me as I would want the phone to lock in those scenarios without me needing to do so manually. It would need to be much more local, such as a Bluetooth connection to my watch, but also within 1 or 2 meters.
