Today I’ve got a bit confused about kilocalories on the Apple Watch.

I went on a walk and according to the watch I did 859 active kcal and 1161 total calories, however when I look at the move kcal it’s only saying 1119 kcal. Then if I go into the app on my phone and check the move section it says move 1119 kcal and total 3223 kcal.

So the walk figures I think I get, the 859 active is the calories burnt physically during the walk and then I assume the total calories (1161) are those for the walk plus those at rest, but if that’s true what are the other total calories (see below) Also why does move ‘only’ show 1119 kcal if the exercise is showing 1161 total calories? And then why is there another total which is significantly higher (3223).

I can only assume that the total of 3223 kcal is the entire calories burnt during the day which means I burn over 2000 kcal by just breathing ? But this the adds to my confusion what the total of 1161 is?

The answer is simply.
The red ring called Move is showing your total active burned calories, during physically activities and during the day.

The watch is tracking activity even if your not starting a training.

Your total calories are Active + Rest

Ok you have burned 859 during your exercise.
The move ring shows 1119 (actives). In the 1119 are the 859 from training + 260 from other movement.

Your daily total shows your entire burned through the day (active+rest)

Does it make sense?

Total Calories for the day = 3,223
Total move calories = 1,161
Total active calories = 859

Total calories for the day are everything burnt from Midnight to Midnight.
Total Move calories are everything burnt through exercise and any other active movement above a resting state.
Total Active calories are those calories burnt as a result of being in a more active state.
 
During the walk :
859 Active
1161 Total
-> 302 Resting (1161-859)

During the day :
1119 Active
3223 Total
-> 2104 Resting (3223 - 1119)

2000+ Resting calories per day sounds ok, you can check your Resting Calories in the Apple Health app on your iPhone (Browse tab > Activity > Resting Energy)

Thanks, I still don’t understand why there are resting calories during the exercise but that must be the case for there to be a separate active and total during exercise. I even get this on the Peloton and there’s certainly no testing on that, so maybe it makes a pre-calculation about your ‘cool-down’? I say pre-calculation as both active and total exercise calories flash up during the Peloton class.

Resting calories are almost constant all along the day. Being sleeping or highly active doesn’t matter, in (very) short it is what your body consumes naturally

Ahh I see so it splits the those purely due to exercise from your normal BMR during exercise. That makes sense, thanks ??
