ya the title isn't very accurate, you're right.

Some one will manufacture the robots, someone will maintain them, people will sell them..........

It is a cycle.

Robots taking care of our elderly and kids!
WHAT THE F! IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE??

Have our parents and grandparents really become such a burden on us in their eldrely years that we can can take care of them on their way out as they have done for us on our way in!?
How selfishly disgusting...You have served yor purpose to bring me into this world, you burden me with your age and ailments, so BE GONE OLD FART!

Your rant is somewhat close-minded. In some families, everyone has to work. Getting a robot for 1000 bucks or so to make sure that 911 can be contacted if grandma has a heart attack is much cheaper than sending her to a nursing home.
Or, in the case of my own grandmother- she lives alone and wants to live alone- but she could use someone to mow her lawn, get down boxes from the attic, vacuum the carpet, carry her groceries, and maybe even play cards with her. If she had a robot assistant, those things could be done when she wanted and she wouldn't have to match up with the schedule of her familiy members. There are many situations where someone chooses to live alone but doesn't physically have the strength/stamina to do everything required to keep a house going, be it through age or disability.

I got Crowndiva's back on this one

My grandmother has recently passed away this year. If I or her son were to tell her that she was going to be looked after by a robot... Neither her son nor myself would be hear today. Thank gosh my grandfather is still alive and was able to look after her by himself since he is in great health , she was bed ridden for many years with a LOT of health problems. She would have commited suicide before a robot was to look after her. My grandmother and grandfather raised me after my mother abonded me, and if it came down to me alone, having to take care of her I would find a way to do so. Yes it would be hard for me to look after a sick elderly person, but I would give all that I could, as would my friends in support of me (thats what friends and neighbors do!) in return to her for loving and raising me while bed ridden on social security and state disability when she didnt have to.

It really says a lot about the ethics and morals of a society, when family, relatives, neighbors, and friends cant take care of each other in times of need.

Thats what you and your family, along with relatives, friends and reighbors should be doing!!!! NOT a frikin ROBOT!

WOULDNT HAVE TO MATCH UP WITH THE SCHEDUEL OF HER FAMILY!
OMFG! The family should be working their scheduel around HER!
MAKE THE TIME! This is a FAMILY MEMBER!

Try to imagine what that does to a persons psycy, sense of self worth, how deeply you would hurt them, if they were told that a robot would look after them beccause you, your family, relatives, firends and neighbors couldnt work it into their scheduel because everyone was too busy and self involved!

Would you also set up a mac with iSight and iChat so that you could video conference with them instead of actually visiting and spending quality time with them!!! ITS NOT THE SAME AS BEING THERE!!

How selfishly disgusting indeed!

And those people without immediate family?

I don't think things are anywhere near what is needed to replace people with a robot (autodoc) but there are a number of things which are and can be automated. Insulin pumps, automated IV drips, pacemakers, remote monitoring tools to call 911 in the event of a heart attack.

Okay, first, this is just a possible technological outcome. Other than a toy dog, I haven't seen Sony marketing any robotic beings.
Second, I wouldn't tell anyone that they have to have a robot looking after them. Someone like my grandmother would desire something like that on her own, despite any reservations her family would have. There are some who have disabilities that are embarrassed that they require others to do mundane things for them. These people would love an appliance that could do basic things for them. I'm sorry, but everyone in the world doesn't have a whole group of people to look after their every whim. It's closed minded to think otherwise. My suggestion would be that those who are disgusted by technology not use it and continue on their merry way minding their own business.

I see these machines as I do coffee makers, computers, ovens, refrigerators. They can-not CARE for anyone or anything, because they don't really think or feel. They can help make some tasks easier like a helper dog, or the like.

I too was raised with my grandparents after an alcholic father choose the alcohol. I could not imagine abandonment and a robot in their old age (both have died now) vs care from a family member.

My mom is self sufficent but I would love to get her one to do the laundry, dishes, cook, clean, get her a book, watch the house, etc....

i would like to have a robot take care of me, it would be cool :/
but i will be a cyborg in the end. ah my "ghost in the shell" dreams will come true

*mental note to watch that tonight*

What about a robotic wet nurse?

Oh, the possibilities

but would it necessarily have to look like a woman?

Robots are in our future, period. We should also realize that like machines or guns, they are basically as good or bad as the people who use them or build them. I'd love to have a robot that could clean the house, do the laundry and take out the trash. Also, drive you home if you've had too much to drink at night. But its going to be a while before it gets there.
