Read my post. Give it a week.

Since many of these initial iPads were probably manufactured in January, and have been sitting around for a week after shipping waiting to be delivered, shouldn't the stuff be dry by now?

What you see is a variation of clouding issue that is always talked about in large LED TVs with side-lit LED. I see it as a limitation of the technology where some are better than others, but you won't see perfect, especially on the white screen like your pictures. Luckily, the screen is mostly filled with colors other than pitch black or white unless you have a hobby of watching movie credits screens.

Well, depending on how you use your iPad. If you just generally surf the web or watch movies, I tend agree with your statement. But if you spend lots of times reading books on the Kindle app, iBooks, or have articles saved in Instapaper, you are basically staring at a white page (or black page when in dark mode) with black letters. Any uneven lighting or coloring becomes very noticeable then. I don't care what color the screen has, it just has to be the same color throughout the panel.

Vacuum sealed.

Then I guess it may never dry. Also, I saw a post quoting an Apple technician who said these iPads don't have the glue problems that the iPhone had.

I'm going to give it a week to see if it improves, but I'm pretty skeptical this issue has to do with anything drying

Personally, I don't expect perfection from an LCD screen, but my general rule of thumb for returning something is whether the issue is present and noticeable during normal usage. Even right not now while typing this, I can see the keys in the bottom left corner of the screen being a different color shade than the rest.

At least backlight bleeding (which my iPad 2 has) is only noticeable in dark environments with the backlight turned up past 50%, in normal usage it isn't even visible.

Same problem here, in portrait, left side screen is yellowish, left top side have minor red tint, right side is fine. I wouldn't mind the whole thing being yellow, but the uneven colored screen make reading text with white background really annoying.

I don't see this on mine...looks fairly even, if it is noticeable to you in normal use, I would suggest making a genius appointment. Some of the LEDs may be off set(or just plain off). Who knows.

Changed, now perfect

Hi, I posted a little while ago, because I had the same problem.

I just went to the Apple Store to returned one my iPads and I got a new one. This one is perfect. It doesn't have the same problem than the previous one. A world of difference. I am very happy now.

In the first iPad, the bar on Safari looked so different on the left side. The grey was a different tone (more yellowish/reddish color). The new one looks totally even.

I'm not sure the keyboard is evenly colored left to right. Is there a gradient?

Some units have a gradient, it is not intended to be this way. It's due to an uneven backlight, so some areas will be lit more and some areas will be lit less, resulting in different color perceptions...

Mine has the same issue, the left side of the screen is warmer than the right side. It gets irritating when reading plain text. I will give it a few weeks and see how I feel about it then.

This is how mine is (repost from some other thread)

100% black.

75% black.

100% white

What do you guys think?

I'm going to spend some time reading on the ipad today. I doubt I will be able to see anything in the day time.

I am an amateur photog though and I do plan on using iPhoto / alternatives.

You can't expect it to be perfect.

I dont think anyone is looking for perfection, just a product that has good quality control that is upto par with the 'majority'. Its a valid exchange to the apple store anyway, especially now that the product is 'all about the screen'

I'm seeing this too. Mostly in portrait mode with a white background. The left edge of the screen is darker. I might give it a couple days before exchanging it, but it bugs me while reading.

I have had the same problem. I am on my 3rd new iPad in 3 days. The first one (from my preorder) had a screen that was tinted yellow, verging on brown. I returned it at the Apple Store (I was actually surprised that I could) and purchased another one immediately. The screen on the second one had a much better color, but the left side of the screen (in portrait orientation) was noticeably darker/yellower than the right side. Initially I thought I could live with it, but it was driving me crazy while reading a book, as my eyes kept going from a darker part of the screen to a lighter part, over and over. So I returned it this morning and got yet another iPad (3rd one in 3 days). I examined it carefully in the store and it looked ok. But when I got it home, I noticed that it too was somewhat darker on the left side of the screen (although probably not as bad as my second one). At this point, I am not sure what to do. I am too embarrassed to go back to the Apple Store for a fourth iPad, so I will probably just live with it.

While I don't own the new iPad, my iPhone has the same issue. It was built in July of 2011 and the uniformity of the backlight has not improved so I doubt it is the glue.

I think because the retina screens are so crisp we are noticing the small variations in backlighting that many of us did not see before. My old iPod Touch has the same issue as my iPhone but I never noticed until after my iPhone arrived.

I've got the same with my new iPad 64GB wifi/4G. In portrait mode, home button at the bottom, the middle left section is also grayish. It improves somewhat with the brightness level pushed all the way up, and most noticeable at the 45% mark.

Just a note with my experience with IPS screens. My first IPS screen was a Dell 24" monitor, which I bought for my Mac Pro. It had the same problem of uneven backlighting, and entire left half of the screen was darker than the other half. I called Dell and they sent a replacement, which was DOA. They then sent another replacement, which had worse backlighting than the first set. Then finally the fourth set came and it was perfect. Last year, I got rid of that Dell and bought an Apple 27" LED monitor, which you know also has an IPS screen. It too had uneven backlighting, with the left side dimmer than the right. Thinking about my past experience with Dell, I didn't want to go through all that fuss for a problem that was pretty trivial. Six months on, I'm beginning to think that the Apple 27" is the best display I've ever owned and I can't see the uneven-ess anymore.

So I'm quite hesitant calling Apple to get them to send a replacement (I got mine online through the Apple Store). Going by all the reports in this thread, there seems to be other sets worse than mine. What if the replacement set is one of these?

The point is: unless you bought it from a brick and mortar store where you can test the replacement unit on the spot, you'll need to consider the possibility that the mail ordered replacement could be worse, unless of course you think that your problem is severe enough to risk the hassle.

I landed up swallowing my pride and returning my 3rd iPad to a different Apple store from the one where I bought it,in the hope that I would get a new one from a different batch. As soon as I turned on the iPad I was returning, the Apple salesperson immediately saw the problem with the screen (even before I had mentioned what the problem was), and said that I needed to exchange it because the screen was unacceptable. That made me feel a little better and less crazy. I picked up iPad #4, which seems to have a uniform crisp white screen. Though I am happy I finally got an iPad with an acceptable screen, I'm annoyed that it took so much of my time to finally find one.

Here's mine with brightness turned all the way up. (note they were taken in an very dark area with a iphone 4s)

Clouding has always been an issue on LCD's, and that will always be a knock on the tech. Uniformity is hard to guarantee, especially with edge-lit displays. You may get one that is perfectly uniform, but even if a display starts out as uniform, it will rarely stay so as it ages. It is annoying, but you could exchange fifty and not find one that is 100% uniform.

I seem to be having this problem too. It is most noticeable when I am trying to read in lower light before going to bed. Half the screen has a different white balance from the rest. I made a Genius Bar appt. for tomorrow and hopefully they can straighten it all out.

Just curious, what's the current status? Did they swap it for a better unit?
