Yes, the salesman did it so HE would get the commission on that
activation. But everyone wins-he gets a sale and you save time.
You also get an iphone set aside for you. Use the system!

I used to work for a cell phone company.

Are you guys sure they'll still be able to get the subsidized price? Sure, the return policy is clear, they'll be able to return the phones. But I didn't see anything about still being considered a new customer and being eligible for all subsidized prices.

I don't think you really saved any time. They still have to process the exchange and since Friday is "iPhone day" it might take longer than usual since they will be in sync doing purchases not exchanges.

The salesman couldn't guarantee they would get iPhones on launch day. So clearly they aren't setting them aside. They have to wait in line like everyone else and risk not getting iPhones on launch day if they run out.

In the first 30 days or whatever the grace period is you can basically return it as if you never bought it. No contract becomes active until after the 30 days.

Think about it. What if this weren't the iPhone and he went in to buy a blackberry only to realize he didn't like it and wanted a smaller smartphone instead. Would it make a lot of sense for AT&T to not give him the good pricing on the second phone. The goal of the pricing is to get him signed up as a customer. If they suddenly spring the full price on him after he gets the second phone...that would be a pretty major incentive NOT to become a customer.
