My friend has a TV in his basement that displays all the channels as "STD #" on the screen.
For example when you go to channel 4 it says "STD 4"

Not exactly an abbreviation, but my parents attended a Christening for a newborn baby boy called "Andrew Peacock", only when mentioned to the parents there and then did they realise that he'd be affectionately known as "Drew Peacock"..
