This evening, possibily for the first time in years, my screen iced over. And after trying every technique to escape the situation, I finally forced a shutdown. Upon restart, after the chimes, all I had was that question mark signifing the system wasn't loading. I tried this a number of times without effect. I also heard that telling clicking sound that suggested this HD was mortally wounded. OK no problem, I had full back up. Plugging in a new drive is rather simple and I'd pick one up tomorrow, reload and get back to work.

But there seemed to be another niggle I didn't understand. I attempted to restart with the install 1/utilities disk to run a diagnostic and attempt a disk repair. But the system refused to load off the disk, when holding down the C key while starting up.

Any explanations on why this should be the case and will it rectify itself when a new HD is installed?

Any help appreciated
