1/4 inch? Are you sure? That's huge. It's about the line spacing on standard ruled note paper.

i thought the same thing. I would be taking it back it I had a gap that big. And I am no where near OCD!

Alright well on closer inspection I definitely exaggerated a bit mainly because I was looking at the thing directly. It's probably more in the ball park of an 1/8" to maybe a 1/16" My apologies for being inaccurate in my measuring. My point is just that it's pretty damn noticeable something that would drive a lot of people here bonkers, I'm sure. Haha

I was thinking that would be a huge gap. I could see 1/16" or so. Like has been said many times. Nothing is perfect. I do understand wanting things to look nice though! ;)
 
Yep, it's a consumer product. People look at Apple's computers completely in the wrong way. More expensive and aesthetically pleasing they are, hand built in Germany they're not. Let it go and enjoy. @ the OP, a flashlight to check imperfections? That's above the OCD mark. C'mon guy, let it go and enjoy. ;)

+1 There is no such thing as a perfect flawless computer.

try selling HP/Dell/Lenovo (I love them) with 'minor cosmetic imperfection' at ANY PRICE.


Oh, by the way, I do have Mac, two for that matter (G5 and C2D iMac)
 
Alright guys...you're right. I'm just gonna relax and enjoy it....cause its really a great computer....way better than any windows computer I have EVER used....I didn't mean to be an ass by any means.....I'm just picky when it comes down to equipment, but now that I think about it....its also constructed better than any PC i've seen. Thank you guys for your input...
 
i am glad things are working out for you. I love my MBP and I hope you have as good an experience with yours as I am having with mine.
 
Another way to look at it is this; even if by some miracle of statistical anomaly, you get a perfect sample of the physical product... out of the box... you'll have to live with the fact that OS X, the heart of the Mac experience... is not perfect. It keeps being improved, sometimes new bugs are created, then there are the updates which sometimes break things software-wise, and it's an ongoing search for improvement in the user-experience... perfect is always the direction you want to aim for, but it is never obtained, or the world would just have to stop at that point. :)

Oh NO!!! Say it isn't so, or at least learn a little about Aluminum!

I have seen 'blotches' that look like a liquid spill dried up on aluminum that was recently cut and I know did not get wet. I think it's just the nature of the material.

Scratches??? Aluminum is a very soft metal, you could look at it cross-eyed, slide it into a case, put a hard case around it and cause a scratch.

I am a motorcyclist, and metal fabricator ( hobbyist - retired from computer field ). On one bike forum a member complained about a scratch in an aluminum wheel. I knew the bike was new and he had not ridden it much at all. Aluminum is tough to keep clean, at least it is when it is a motorcycle wheel.
 
If you go around using a flashlight (or light from a certain direction) to look for surface deviations you are in need of professional help already - nothing to do with the economy.


It has everything to do with economy and how much you pay for a certain product. Mac are so expensive and Im sure you cant help it if you see any imperfection. Like when you buy a brand new car how does it feel when you leave your car park, when you came back you find a door ding on it. Versus when you buy a beat up car you dont even care. But in time when your macbook is aleady past its prime you probably toss it around the couch.
 
It has nothing to do with the economy - it has to do with a fixation on irrelevant minutia - frequently associated with OCD or autism.

Hardware/software defects that cause issues should be fixed. "Significant" (whatever that means) cosmetic flaws should be corrected by Apple also.

Taking a flashlight out to replicate some light direction that shows a surface deviation on a milled & anodized aluminum laptop goes beyond the pale - IMO and that of most responders on this thread. Even the OP has recognized the need to move on.

He has a pretty computer by most of our expectations - that is fine - now go use it for good outcomes.

i know that this guy is being a little ridiculous. but that should be the reason. just lighten up and use the damn thing. like i said the whole lighten up because you are going to die anyway philosophy is just silly. but whatever dont really care.

All i'm saying is that if I pay $2,500 for a laptop...I expect it to be as perfect as possible.....is build quality not important? I happened to first notice it when I was sitting by a sunny window....and since that, i've only used a flashlight to replicate the conditions. Plus, they call it a PRECISION unibody....if one were to use the engineering definition of precision here, this wouldn't meet specifications.

its made in a factory, nothing will be perfect. The only thing that can ever be perfect is if you make it yourself. I dont see ocd here, i see someone who needs a job, or a hobby, b/c seriously? a flashlight?

Um, but he's right. I work with autistic children. He's only pointing out a common trait that can be found in some individuals with autism.

Nothing to be ashamed of at all - and you obviously don't know what you are talking about. Having worked 15 years in a tertiary acute care center one deals with many types of patients and the symptomatic traits of their disorder. Fixation on the type of minutia is common in both disorders as well as several other disease processes.
