I think you atleast need to try and have apple take care of it.
If they refuse then that's pretty pathetic.

I Get better service from Dell with a $400 laptop then people do with Apple with computers that are 3x as much. Dell has fixed ever little thing I ever complained about, I paid $400 for the computer and $79 for 2 years extended service and they treat me like I paid $2,000 for it.

I'm realllly hoping nothing goes wrong with my MBP13 because I don't ever want to deal with Apple with the experiences I've had with their other products.

Epiphany on surface Andonization Peeling on Macbook PRO

It has just dawned upon me that I encountered small shocks from the edge of the surface frequently. Users from the forums suggested this was minor and normal. But now the surface of my Unibody Macbook PRO is peeling from the edge!!!! I do connect the Macbook pro to the 24 ACD could this current issue be affect the Andonization??????????

In regards to the Manchester stores, I recommend either the Trafford Centre store (make sure you get a Genius Bar appointment or you'll be waiting for a long time) or GBM in Ardwick.

The Arndale store is absolutely terrible.

I got these too before I put the plastic palmrest covers on...the tingling/shocking is one of those things about MBPs like the very sharp edges on many cases etc that are REAL but if you mention it you get jerks telling you that it's "not a problem" or "mine doesn't do it so you must me lying/stupid/whatever". Apple will not address these kind of things publicly because it would be admitting a mistake and cost them a ton.

That being said I can't say if current (which again DOES pass through the aluminum bodies to some degree) can affect anodizing after the fact or not. Normally to remove anodizing different chemical combos are used and electricity isn't part of the process. I would bet its more likely in your case to be an example of bad initial mix or application which allowed it to detach from the metal in that spot. The other thread looks more like it's been worn off not detached from below like yours but it should still be more durable that to just wear off with normal hand contact.

I've never been to an apple store but I can tell you by calling and being polite Apple definitely goes above and beyond trying to help customers.

Of the three times I've called:

-First call: I called to buy an Applecare for my ACD. I purchased the ACD about 25 days after my laptop. Well, Apple adjusted the purchase date of my ACD to the same day as my laptop and allowed BOTH to be covered under ONE applecare! I also got a student discount so 3 years of coverage on both items for $250!

-Second call: I ordered a mbp for a friend and she got a free iPod touch. Well, I misspelled the engraving "Go Penns!" instead of "Go Pens!" (sorry, I dont watch sports what can I say?) and I called to see if it was too late to change it. It was but the guy on the phone said he felt bad and offered free overnight shipping of my order! I politely declined because it was my mistake not apples but it was a very nice gesture.

-Third call: My new ACD was not turning on. I work in IT and understand this stuff happens. No biggie. Well, I was outside my return period but Apple not only took it back and exchanged it for a brand new one but they ALSO gave me $170 CREDIT for my inconvenience! I'd love for someone to chime in and say Dell or someone else would do that. (And don't try and make up any stories several office mates of mine worked at Dell.)

So, to the OP I would say try giving Apple a call, explain the shocking, and now the peeling and be very polite. I'm not sure about the Apple stores but the phone people are extremely nice. (One reason is they probably don't have the same pressure the Applestore people do.)

There may be an issue with the anodizing process here. These are not painted, but treated with an anodized coating, which is supposed to hold up to normal wear and tear for the useful life of the machine. I have never seen a newer Unibody MB or MBP with "peeling" finish.

It's not anodizing, it's powder coating. Powder coating is paint and can chip off much like what has happened on yours.

If the machine gets hot enough and cools off, the machine is going to expand and contract, and could be an issue with any coating on any notebook. Dont forget that the white macbook didnt show the cracking issue for about 12-18 months after first use.

I have a nearly decade old Compaq with the coating intact...if they can do it so can a company in 2009 that charges as much as they do. The disturbing thing is that when issues DO arise companies make every effort to dodge dealing with it. A one year warranty on such an expensive item is ridiculous...should be minimum of 3 from the factory. Honestly you should be able to expect even longer than that without defects. It's just not right to take someone's money and not hold up your end. Most people would not accept it if they were told up front that it would be normal for the finish to be worn off in spots in 2 years...and there are much more serious and performance affecting issues Apple avoids as well. It is not the standard and not acceptable.

I agree it shouldnt happen, but obviously it is and should be addressed by apple, and not like they did with the white MacBook, were they did it but really didn't admit to a problem. That being said is that compaq you sleek of plastic or a metal body. Better plastic from years ago holds up better, my PowerBook pismo still looks fairly new

I have never seen that happen before. And based on that, and the fact that there is no other damage to the computer, I would bet that they will repair/replace it for you.

It simply looks defective. So go in there with positive/firm/polite attitude, and I'm sure they will help. This is very unusual.

thanks for all the comments and support. I am travelling at the moment but will pop the Apple store as soon as I return. Will update you on the outcome.

It was metal and plastic mixed. Cheapening material quality is a complaint that moves through the ages. Profit is king.

Surface Peeling!!!

Ok, just spoken to apple care on the phone in Athens, Greece.
Explained the issue on the phone to a guy called Nikolaos. He has stated that apple will fix this and has given me a case number to follow up with the Apple store when I go in. Will update you again.

Unibody macbook pro surface peeling

Dear all,

I finally managed to make some time and get my unibody macbook pro repaired. Last November I reported surface peeling on my macbook pro 15 unibody. Apple had acknowledged the issue as a fault and agreed to have the casing replaced within warranty. I received the macbook pro back today from the Manchester store and am thoroughly happy :):):):):):):):):):):D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

My macbook looks brand new. What was a nice bonus is that they replaced the keyboard and track pad also. I am so happy just had to share this with you all. Great after sales and care service from Apple. Big thumbs up.
