At idle, my 15" unibody is at 32C with fans running at 4000rpm.

Why do you keep it at 4000 rpm. Dosen't that wear more on the fans (mbp) than having a temp on 40C would do on the cpu (the cpu can handel a temp up to 100C).

By the way i think my MBP2,4 (unibody) is a bit cooler after the update. Idle at 38-40C with normal surfing

My 2.66GHz uMBP idled at around 50C before the update. After the update, it's idling at 62C. That's a full 12 degrees! I have the same fan control as before, and it's also in the same location on my desk.

Added wear on fans? Probably. But it's a work computer. :)

My early 08 mbp also saw an increase in the temp area, but I thought it was because it was yeasteryear tech...I'm surprised to hear about unibodies.

uMBP 17" 2.66 with fan control (2000rpm hold up to 45C setting)
after 10.5.7 everythings works the same and fine here.

At idle, my unibody is at 38C - 45C with fans running at 2000-2100rpm

Maybe I am in the minority, but i have not noticed it running any hotter. If I had to guess, I would guess that it is actually running cooler. I don't have a temp gauge running though. I have not seen any difference.

After installing a bunch of Apps + the update mine runs hotter than it did "stock."

I'd be able to keep it around 50 while doing work and it's run in the low 40's and even 30's with light work.

Now anything below 50 is great...

Does anyone know what could cause the CPU to run hotter? What apps should I check?

I can hear my fans wiring a lot more often after 10.5.7 than I did before. right now my machine isn't really taxed but it's at 85 degrees and the fans are 4000 RPM and climbing.

Are there any other articles discussing increase in fan usage post 10.5.7?

Finder bug?

I noticed the same problem with fan noise and temps. I opened the activity monitor and found that the finder was hogging the cpu so I did a relaunch and immediately the fans slowed down, the cpu % went from 99% to 2% as I only had activity monitor open. Maybe there is a memory leak in 10.5.7 related to finder?

Definitely Hotter, it also gave my headphone jack a buzzing noise like static in the background at low volume. It wasn't there before the update.

I just bought the new 2.8 ghz MBP yesterday so its completely stock.

With the Temperature Monitor Widget my MBP idles around 64c for the "CPU A Temperature Diode" and 58c for the "Graphics Processor Chip" when I'm using the 9600gt.

Since I am new to mac, are these temps normal or do they seem a little high?

Thanks

To the OP.

Maybe stop looking at the temperature widget and enjoy your MacBook. It's designed so that you power it on, and use it. No need to poke around really, IMHO. :)

I was having major freezing problems with my unibody refurb. I also noticed it was running particularly hot, averaged about 60C without doing anything! I did and archive and reinstall back to 10.5.6 and now the machine does not freeze any longer and runs at 45C pretty much all the time. The difference between the two OS versions was dramatic for me!

I think my new 13" MBP has 1.7 (can't seem to find it in System Profiler). Seems to be running hot! 66~72C. I'm going to try Coolbook to see if that brings it down at all.

I ordered my MBP yesterday and it'll come July 28th. Will it come with this update, or will it ask me to update it, and should I even bother to update it? I already ordered Snow Leopard though so it shouldn't matter too much.
