The mac app store had an update for an app I previously installed. I clicked to install it and it would no install. Then I tried to uninstall the app using the traditional launchpad method. That didn't work. I then dragged the app from the application folder to the trash and cleaned thrash. I then tried to reinstall the app but that didn't work. I'm stuck with an app update from that mac store that I can't delete and can't reinstall the app. Thanks for any help

There are a couple of things you can try. First, open a Terminal window and type the following command. This will reveal a debug menu in the App Store menu bar.
Code:
defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true

Afterwards, relaunch the App Store and open the debug menu. There should be an entry called ‘Reset Application’, which you need to click on. Then restart the application and try downloading your app again. This option should remove any cached downloads and the App Store’s internal cache directory.

I don't see the debug menu.

Have you entered the command into Terminal and restarted the App Store?

The menu should look like this:

Well, I found the debug menu in the menu bar. Clicked on it, clicked Reset Application, quit App Store, opened App Store and it still says that the app needs to be downloaded. This is a download of the app I moved to the thrash. It doesn't download and it should not since I deleted the app from the application folder.

I installed the app from time machine. I still can't remove the update of the app as shown in the app store application. I guess it won't bother me some maybe it will go away by itself. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Have you rebooted since? Just to make sure that nothing is stuck. If that still does not work, then you might have to look a bit closer into that particular application, as zone23 suggested.
