A new collaboration between Apple, IBM, and United Airlines was announced today, with the companies joining together to bring "a robust suite of enterprise iOS apps" to United's flight attendants and gate agents as a means to make the customer's flying experience smoother. In total, Apple and United Airlines have issued over 50,000 iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches to front-line employees of United, and the airline intends to use resources from Apple and IBM to deliver app-based tools and services at a faster and more consistent pace.

United is seeking the opinion of its employees to figure out which features it should focus on in the apps being built for workers. According to a top executive in charge of United's technology division speaking with Business Insider, flight attendants and gate agents met with Apple and IBM in Cupertino last week, helping to start work on an app that will allow flight attendants "to communicate maintenance items discovered on the plane back to the maintenance teams."

"This enhanced strategy with mobile solutions from IBM and Apple allows United Airlines employees to tap into the right information at the right time to instantaneously address the needs that matter most to passengers."
The new deal with United Airlines is the latest evolution in the partnership between Apple and IBM, which began in 2014 with the purpose of creating transformative mobile apps for the enterprise sector. In regards to its reason for joining Apple and IBM, United's CIO Linda Jojo said, "we wanted to have the best devices in the hands of our employees."

Apple and IBM's partnership has included travel-related apps in the past, including one that let flight attendants sell seat upgrades, food, beverages, and merchandise to passengers with the ease of Apple Pay. The app, called Ancillary Sale, also remembered individual passenger preferences, so flight attendants could recommend items on current flights based on the purchases a user made on previous flights.

One of United's new apps is said to provide flight attendants with information on which passengers have connecting flights so they can better help customers find their gates upon arrival. Another will allow customer service agents more mobility to move about the concourse to help customers, instead of being tied to a single location.

None of this will improve what is fundamentally wrong with air travel.

So what happens when an iOS update bricks 50k devices?

IT departments decide when employees can update their software. IT will test the update first to ensure no such issue exists.

I used to fly over 100k miles per year all in North America -- mostly with UAL. Now I work from home thanks to technology that didn't exist more than a decade ago when I was flying all over the place (i.e. gigabit fiber). A company couldn't pay me enough to entice me to become an air/road warrior again. I enjoyed it while I did it, though.

I wish they had iPads in back of of the head rests.

I read an article recently saying that one airline (I believe it was Delta) is actually removing the seatback screens from some of their planes because they're finding that many customers spend the entire flight engrossed in the screen they brought on the plane. Makes sense, I think. It's a win for the airlines because they lower the weight of the aircraft by removing the AV equipment, which, in turn, increases the plane's fuel economy.

Yeah... no...

If you thought the obnoxious guy who insists on resting their feet pressed against your seat from behind is annoying any time there is acceleration or braking or his body movement involved, this would drive me crazy even more.

Consider this: constant tapping. You hear it, you feel it... And the weird sense that someone's finger is always 2 or 3 inches away, knocking, tapping...

If you thought the obnoxious guy who insists on resting their feet pressed against your seat from behind is annoying any time there is acceleration or braking or his body movement involved, this would drive me crazy even more.

Consider this: constant tapping. You hear it, you feel it... And the weird sense that someone's finger is always 2 or 3 inches away, knocking, tapping...

But a lot of airlines already offer touch screen entertainment systems, how is this any different?

I was on a United flight between SFO and DEN (a domestic 777 with new seats from the look of it) last month that had no screens in economy, just an adjustable bracket that you could use to attach a tablet or phone to the seat in front of you where the screen would be. I'd be nice if they offered a "rental" iPad as an add-on option or something, but honestly, I vastly prefer that to the crappy screen you usually get. I have more than enough entertainment already with me, so I appreciate the place to stick the device. (It also presumably reduces overall weight of the plane slightly, and frees up a little space underneath the seats where the electronics box would be.)

I've wondered why Airlines didn't start doing that years ago, so it was nice to see United actually implementing the scheme.

United also has a pretty decent selection of streamable video entertainment and a live map/flight-status display you can bring up on a phone or tablet even on small Embraer planes, which is nice.

Now I just wish that the actual seats in economy had as much space as the photo there.

I would gladly take Siri as a flight attendant over any of the grouchy old hags UAL employs.

I fly 8 times/month, being based in MSP I'm usually on Delta. But every so often the company puts me on United. I'd rather take a Greyhound Bus if I could.

50k iDevices WILL NOT fix United's problems.
