Where is this assumption that hand gestures are going to replace dedicated controllers for a given task coming from?

Vision Pro supports input peripherals. Mouse/Keyboard/Controllers.
It supports the same controllers that iOS/iPadOS do. Those are console controllers only, not motion controllers. Motion controllers are a must for supporting VR games.

You mean for existing VR game as-is ports.

I’d rather a golf game use my actual putter for my game, which absolutely can be done with the frameworks provided by Apple, than those ridiculous things VR people use today 🤷‍♂️

Yes, for existing and future games. Game developers are going to give Vision Pro as much attention as they do with macOS or iOS. The best VR games will continue to require motion controllers. That's not going to translate well to hand tracking only or even at all. Most people aren't going to have a real club or gun or racket or whatever the thing might be. You call them ridiculous, but tactile feedback with motion controllers is a huge part of VR. Hand tracking alone obviously can't provide that.

Have you ever played any popular VR titles? It's pretty clear how big of a role motion controllers are in VR.

I think VR gaming itself is a niche that will be supported, but not a main driver for the future of Apple’s approach to Spacial Computing. If a company wants to make a VR controller for the platform they can, but I think Apple has other ideas for haptic feedback and accessories in the long run.
