Following the release of macOS Big Sur this week, a number of apps have received compatibility updates for the latest operating system. Many of the apps have also been updated with native support for Apple Silicon Macs with the M1 chip.

Launching on November 19, image editing app Pixelmator Pro 2.0 features an all-new design for macOS Big Sur, ranging from a simplified Effects Browser to new layouts for the sidebars and presets. A new Workspaces feature lets users customize the look of Pixelmator, with presets optimized for photo editing, design, illustration, and painting. The app is also universal now, with native support for both Apple Silicon Macs and Intel-based Macs.

Pixelmator Pro 2.0 takes advantage of the M1 chip's 16-core Neural Engine for accelerated machine learning. This allows features like Super Resolution, which intelligently increases the resolution of images while preserving details, to work up to 15x faster.

Writing app Ulysses has been updated with a new design and icon for macOS Big Sur, as well as native support for Apple Silicon Macs. There is also a refined Revision mode with a dedicated view outside of the dashboard, and a new "editor focus" mode that hides all chrome and presents sidebars as overlays. Version 21 of Ulysses for Mac is available now.

Blackmagic Design today announced that it has released a new beta of its popular filmmaking app DaVinci Resolve with native support for Apple Silicon Macs. The recently released DaVinci Resolve 17 is a major new release with over 300 new features and improvements, including HDR grading tools, redesigned primary color controls, and more.

Guilherme Rambo's podcast to video converter FusionCast is available on the Mac App Store with native support for Apple Silicon Macs, as is Bare Bones Software's text and code editor BBEdit and Shihab Mehboob's third-party Twitter client Aviary.

Earlier this week, we highlighted other universal apps like Darkroom, Fantastical, and djay Pro AI.

The first Macs with the M1 chip will begin arriving to customers on Tuesday, and we'll be sharing more universal apps in the coming days.

Don’t forget Nova! Runs natively on the M1 now.

Haven’t heard of Nova? It’s the successor to Coda, by Panic, which released a few months ago. It is an excellent piece of software for web development. Coda was basically the gold standard and it carries that forward in many ways. It has really helped streamline my development process! https://nova.app/

Never really thought about how few non-native apps I use, but once there are compatible versions for Chrome, Zoom, and VSCode (and its extensions), I'm pretty much covered. I think Chrome and Zoom will quickly (or may already) have universal versions. I'm actually surprised that I don't use that many non-web apps any more, but unlike the need for the original Rosetta, this seems like it could be a walk in the park

Nice plug. :D Panic’s attention to detail is wonderful, but their prices tend to be troublesome for my budget. Shame really.

As for the article, nice to see. Pixelmator Pro 2 might be in my future when I move to an M1 Mac next year.

Great! Great great great... Hopefully even the open source software will adopt the new architecture and everyday apps like KeepingYouAwake, Transmission, or even old console emulators will be native soon.

Not the gold standard, sorry. It's nice, but no match for Dreamweaver.

Ohh, BBEDIT is one of my favorite apps. If Bare Bones comes out with Yojimbo for Big Sur too, I may spring for another Mac. Can't seem to find a decent replacement in any other OS. Replacing a couple databases with hundreds of entries is as nasty as finding a reliable iTunes replacement. Rhythmbox, shudder. PiOS is nice, Ubuntu is nice, but both have the inevitable holes relative to MacOS.

Great we have coded apps for ARM
But there's no 3rd party drivers.
Will there be ever?
So none of your peripherals will work without them writing arm drivers.

Is this true as nothings been said about this yet.

I really hope instagram updates their app.

I stream live a lot and would love to be able to stream using my DSLR.
I've read that none of the Facebook apps for iOS will be being released in the Mac App Store for ASM. The same for Google's apps. Not every developer will be allowing their apps to come to the ASM platform.

I'm also incredibly impressed at the speed of these apps being released. Considering users don't actually have the machines in hand yet. As one of those users who remembers the PPC to Intel transition, this is way a RAPID!

Any device that uses kexts will probably need an ARM driver. If you don't install anything for your device then it'll probably work fine (ie: it's using the system drivers).

I’ll stick with Textmate 2. Which just keeps working without fail.
