The next thing to do should be to remove the requirement for both devices to be under the same Apple ID. Instead replace with a prompt or confirmation of a 6 digit code on both devices. This will allow anyone using a Mac for work to quickly connect to the iPad.

This is my beef with it (if I understand correctly) that I cannot use this since my company will not allow me to log in to my work MBP with my Apple ID. Hopefully, I'm mistaken.

Are you talking about logging into the device using your Apple ID or just logging into iCloud services with your Apple ID?

I don't think that the local login account needs to be your Apple ID, mine isn't, but your iCloud credentials need to be the same. just suggesting you check on that.
