i have a question about this new Universal Dock. could i use it to connect to my TV and just play music that way? i have a 4g ipod and would love to be able to transfer by TV into a stereo that way, as it has great sound.

i think you nee the new apple AV cable to plug it into the TV with. it won't work with the nano. does that mean it won't work at all or just for pictures?

I am not completely clear what you mean but I believe if you are asking will your 4th gen iPod will fit into the universal dock and be able to play stereo quality music through it to a TV i believe the anwser is yes. You need a mini plug-to-RCA (Red and White Cable)

I don't wanna hijack this thread nor do i wanna start my own so here it goes will this universal dock connector that comes with the 5G iPod fit into my 3rd Gen 20gig iPod dock does anyone have any idea?? I can not find this answer anywhere!!!

so is this mini-plug to RCA connector something i could just get at radio shack? maybe i don't need the connector to play my 4g ipod on my big TV?

also, i wouldn't think the adapter would fit on the old docks but i may be wrong. haven't seen one yet.

I currently have a 3rd gen ipod with the dock that came with it. I use the audio out jack on the dock to connect into my home stereo and and works like a charm...

You don't even need the dock to be able to play music through a stereo or TV (if what you want to do works)

I would say that hooking an RCA y splitter would work (yes you can get them at Radioshack).

The cable you are looking for is red and white on one end and the other end looks like something you would plug into a headphone jack.

The line out port on the docks works the same way as plugging that cable into your headphone jack.

Of course the dock makes it look nicer.

i think i will do this and order the dock so i can use the remote with it, for my nano and 4g and for my wife's mini.

iDM, according to the Apple Store, these are the iPods compatible with the Universal Dock. (see attached thumbnail)
