Good luck, FearFactor!

I'll be attending college/university next year myself. I can pull of good grades in high school, but I worry a bit about how well I'll be able to perform in a post secondary environment. I'm also painfully shy, so I'm likely to be quite alone. However, I've taken this point of view: do the very best you can (huge thanks to those two people who helped me find this point of view and get over my fear). I plan on working as hard as I need to, and getting out of my parents house and into residence as quickly as possible. View it as an adventure :D

I was pretty much in the same situation as what you described. Started my first semester taking Chem 121, Math 152, and English 110.01. Altogether that is 15 credit hours. Luckly i dont have to work and i only have about a 20 min drive to my college. 2 hours would be a VERy long ride every morning.

I am finding, like you, that math is kinda a joke. I was very perficient in math and tested out of most of the math classes the branch i am going to offered. Right now i am taking the second installment of college calculus class and it is easy.

My other class that i am finding OK is english. I dont really like it but for the most part it is fine. the hardest thing i found is getting the papers turned in for the first rough draft, after that everything gets easier.

As for chem...well...it is the hardest class and the one i hate the most. I guess it is like your physics class. Fortunantly i stuck with it and brought my grades up.

My advice is to find a club to get invovled in. The more you participate the better the college experience will be. If you can get closer to campus that would be a good thing.

Just stick with it and stick to what you like best.

Thank you for all of your great comments!

you want to get to know someone more in depth, you have to put forward the effort. or else nothing will ever happen. what do you got to lose?

I find I run out of things to say in computer science when talking to that person. mostly because I feel awkward around them, because I like them. What do you suggest I could ask them? Typical things I already ask are 'What did you do at the weekend', 'How are you' etc. What else could I ask?

Another good thing I didn't mention: I have became better friends with someone from secondary school because they go to the same uni as me and we regularly get the train home/train to uni so that's nice.

with regards to the friends thing - dont worry, most of the people i know dont feel that they have made really good friends like they used to have at school and i feel exactly the same.

my first year was pretty depressing and i just stuck at it. i had 'friends' but not ones that you are close to. my measure is if you have a really good time with them while clubbing - if you can go, feel comfortable etc then they are good friends - like my school frineds. if not it is just awkward. pretty lame measure i know!

anyway it is only really this year (my 3rd) and possibly the last term of my 2nd where is started to make better friends and that is because i got really involved with a society, got a position on the committee and made heaps of friends that way and now things are better.

i honesly think that working so much and living away from uni isnt helping you - you dont get to socialise as much and at least living in uni - you get to know the poeple on your corridor - you may end up hating them (as i did) but at least at the beginning it was a few people to talk to!

How about something along the lines of 'I went to a great comedy club/restaurant' at the weekend? Comedians were really funny/food was really good. Why don't you come along next time I go?"

Isn't that lying though??? :p :p

What happens if he takes them there... and the comedians are not funny and the food is crap because he actually hasn't been there??? :p :p

Well, yesterday I have started Semester 2 and I thought I'd just give all of you interested a little update.

A few weeks ago I had exams.

1R Maths final exam - which went really well, expecting an A or high B (this was due to getting good grades in 2 class tests worth 10% each).
1P Computing Science exam (Ada Programming) - went terrible, lucky to get 35%. This is only a class test and counts for 10% of my final exam in May.
1Q Computing Science exam (Human Computer Interaction and Information Management) went quite well, expecting an A or high B again.
1X Physics exam - never sat it.

Now in this Semester, I have completely dropped physics, and picked up an extremely easy subject 'Exploring the Cosmos'. Seems easy enough.

I have proceeded now to Maths 1S which stills allows me to do honours. (Other choice was 1T which is if you are doing a degree - but I haven't decided yet).

Started Computer Systems in 1Q Computer Science which actually seems interesting.

I can now get up at 8 every morning as my first lecture is at 11am.

I had a second class test for Maths (worth 10% of final exam) in which I got full marks in (only three people got this) out of a class of around 150+ people. So I was chuffed :).

And I have bought an iBook so I can now take a computer to uni with me.

The friends situation is much the same but I have approached this new semester with a new found enfusiasm. I didn't want to come back to uni, but I've been open minded and tried to be optimistic.

I have a computer science tutorial in 20 minutes, so I will post any results I get back for that :).

Oh, and I get my Maths exam results on Feburary the 16th.

in college you are open to a vast majority of people who are in the same boat as you are.. once you are out of college "making those friends" will be an even tougher venture, not easier.. enjoy college while you still can. the way i see it is like this.. when you were in what we americans call "high school", their were clubs and groupies and clicks and what not.. in college their is pretty much none of that except for the Greek scene.. and that you have to pay to get into.. other wise your on your own.. in the real world you don't even have a greek scene :p (lol i know what an example).. once you get a job, your confined to the people in and around you at your workplace in terms of social life. now of course you can go outside of that social circle, but again it will require effort.. something only you can decide on.
