Extremely unlikely
Yeah, which is why I wanted to make sure there wasn't a jailbreak on the phone. Don't know how policy-oriented a genius I'll get.

Most of the geniuses I've dealt with there have been nice people though. Haven't met a bad one yet.

----------

Good question.
I went to settings/genera/spotlight search and unchecked everything.
So when I search for cydia nothing comes up besides search web.
But if they went back in those settings, enabled applications search then search for cydia they would find it.
But I doubt many will waste time or bother with all that.
Place is always packed and they try to get everyone in and out as quick as possible.
AH! I wasn't aware of that, but then I'm not using Spotlight very much so I wasn't paying any attention. But, you're right. If you've done that the genius probably isn't going to waste time.

My experience is most Apple employees could care less if your device is jailbroken. I have never hidden my jailbreak when going to Apple store, not one Genius has ever admonished me for it, but they do notice it and are curious.

You'll get iOS 7. This time last year, iOS 6 *was* the current version. iOS 7 is the current version, as iOS 8 is still in beta and will be released within a couple days of the iPhone 6 release next month. Their refurb/replacement devices are all refreshed with the current iOS revision.

I replaced a Verizon iPhone 5 white 64gb around a month ago and I got iOS 6.1.2

True.
But like you, I'd bring it in restored and clean if I knew they will just replace it.
At first I thought with my case that they would switch out the battery so figured instead of restoring up to stock 7.1.2 and then bring it back home, JB it, sync everything back and reinstall all my hacks I'd take a chance.
I did the same thing about 6 months ago when my speaker stopped working and I had no sound. So they replaced the speaker and I kept everything JB but hidden when I brought it in.
I was nervous again but luckily they didn't catch it:D

Still its a risk though.
With my luck I'd get the one employee that's against JB and makes a big deal about it, refuses service and then cancels my warranty in their system.:p:p

Well, here's what happened…

I showed up 25 minutes early and got seen at 5:50pm (my appointment was 6pm). The first genius was a triage type guy, figuring out who he needed to pass up to the bar and who he could take care of. Explained my situation (apparently my account had actually been noted) so the guy passed me up to the bar (another genius came and got me). A third genius actually handled the swap. Note, that the genius I dealt with on Saturday was actually there, but she wasn't taking care of me.

The guy that actually handled the swap told me I was getting the last 64GB Sprint iPhone 5 they had in black. At all points I was asked if I had backups and I said yes (because I do), but I asked the phone to be set up as new. Crossed my fingers when they turned the new phone on and…iOS 7.1.2.

Oh well. I console myself with the fact that I will be able to try a black theme that can turn the entire OS black and not just the cobbled together stuff I was using that only got parts of it.

Right now I don't have anything on it. I'll run the Pangu jailbreak tomorrow and then take it from there. I have a complete PKGBackup backup that got all my apps, videos, pics, etc so we'll see how this goes.

If your PkgBackup is from 6.1 and the firmware is 7.1.2 - using PkgBackup may throw you into a boot loop if even 1 Cydia hack is incompatible.
Thanks, that has me concerned too. Going to try and be careful. Maybe try a few at a time or so.

Is it possible that this iPhone is brand new or did they just simply refurb it less than a month ago? Not that I care because I believe refurbs are just as good, but I'm curious.

<SIGH>

Four hours to go until my appointment time. Everything backed up and iPhone restored to iOS 7.1.2 in preparation.

Had to put it in DFU mode.

Bye bye iOS 6.1 and jailbreak…for now.

Post back later tonight to let you guys know what I got.

Just don't make a thread about downgrading to iOS 6 :D

When Apple refurbs a phone, it is given a new serial number which shows the refurb date, not the hardware's original manufacture date.

Based on all the issues going on with crappy iPhone 5 batteries (I know most repairs are battery replacements), no doubt the turnaround time from refurb to re-issue is short.

You have to admit, there is something kind of cool in receiving a brand new (even refurbished) iPhone, older model or not.

I love that feeling!

LOL. All of the learned people on this site say it's not possible. If those smart people say it can't be done there's no way in hell I could ever do it, LOL!

Hmmm…ok, thanks. It doesn't really matter because it's brand new to me. Although I suspect it's probably got the new power button improvements considering that program is ongoing too.

Who knows. I like it. All the dings and scuffs I had are now gone and my phone is back to being solid black again. Can't say as much for the unicorn puke iOS, but oh well. :D

You can get used to iOS7, I did (hated it at first - now as long as the phone and apps work it just doesn't matter that much - if at all :)).
And surprisingly, it doesn't take that long to overlook (forget about) all the objectionable stuff.

Well, If I can make it black it might start the healing process. :D

Anyway, update. Now jailbroken!

Off to see what I can do next.

Well…looks like PKGBackup set me up fairly well. I'm getting an update bar and then the screen flashes. But I believe that is because I am trying to restore videos and it's getting hung up.

Restored and going to try again but this time without restoring video and see what happens. PKG Backup seems to be ignoring non-iOS 7 specific stuff.

SUCCESS!!!

After the second restore I decided to dump all the videos that I had copied out of the iTunes Control folder on my old phone right in to iTunes. I then synced the video back. I'd prefer to have the video titles (Honeymooners episodes) but I'm ok with getting my 18GB of video back on to my device.

And this is why they call it a Lightning cable! When I first synced these movies using a PC with a USB 1.1 port it took a day and a half. The Lightning cable took about 30-40 minutes!

After that it was hammering on PKG Backup to get a full restore (kept going to safe mode). After that I knew I would get safe mode (and I did) so I used Cydia to go through tweak by tweak to see which tweaks were popping up as not compatible. I removed all of them and installed two new ones from previous tweaks that I use. But I still had one that was causing Safe Mode. So, using iCleaner Pro I tracked it down to WeatherIcon 6. Uninstalled that and now I boot right up with no Safe Mode.

I also, somehow think I got a better jailbreak the second time around. The first time I was left with the Pangu JB app on the springboard. The second time it's gone. Weird.

Anyway, now it's simply a matter of cleaning all this stuff up. Copic wants activation, Forecast, blah, blah, blah. Still though, some of my Winterboard tweaks for versions of iOS before 7 and 6 are working. :D

Going to be busy tonight!

Ouch! I can't imagine anyone using USB 1.1 in today's standards where data is in the hundreds of megabytes or gigabytes, if not tens of gigabytes!

I think if your device gets a boot failure during the jailbreaking process, pangu fails to properly clean up because it only does that cleaning up step once and that's after the first reboot

Good luck on getting your device to the way you like it!

Well, the last time I really used it for syncing was in late 2012. I had to use the PC to jailbreak the iPhone for Evasi0n 6 as well. But everything else I have done on this phone solely from the phone.

Now that I've gotten all this out of the way I'm back to the phone again. Setting up the interface now, just installed Eclipse. Black is better!

----------

interested in seeing your "black" ios 7 setup as well once you have it set up.
Sure! It'll be a day or so though as I start finding stuff to replace stuff I had. A good start was Eclipse though.

Knocking things out as I go. Solved my biteSMS licensing issue and a bunch of other stuff. Copic is still annoying me on it's licensing issues and I've contacted the dev three times!

Anyway, lockscreen is pretty much back to normal. I just don't have live papers anymore. But there may be an iOS 7 tweak for that. Have to see.

Homescreens are still a mess and I'm missing my ringtones. I have them all, but there are in that iTunes naming fashion so I have no idea what each one is.

Anyway…lockscreen as it is now.
