I've been trying to jailbreak my 3GS with Redsn0w and 5.0 ipsw...I get an error when trying to boot it tethered. I then downloaded Forecast and it tells me that my phone is not able to be jailbroken. I just want to know if there is anyway around this, or if there's a step I'm missing.

not true. all 3g and 3gs can be jailbroken and unlocked. now depending on what firmware you have you could be forced to use a tethered jailbreak.

what error code are you seeing?
what version redsnow are you using?

I was using Redsn0w B8, with a 5.0 ipsw..I didnt mean to but when I first got it I updated to 5.0.1...My firmware is 05.16.05..I installed the jailbreak and all went well. I try to boot tethered after and I keep getting "unrecognizable build." With fingerprint "38B5CBCCCF371F02BA2CB2215AAF4B3." The Cydia icon is on my desktop, but it's not white like it's supposed to be?

Which version of redsn0w did you use to jailbreak & boot tethered your phone?

You can also downgrade yours to 4.1 and you will have an untethered jailbreak.

I used 9.9b8. With 5.0 ipsw. How do I downgrade??
1. Download 3GS 4.1 firmware to your computer.
2. Download Tiny Umbrella to your computer.
3. Put your phone into DFU mode. Itunes will indicate that your phone is in recovery and it need to restore.
4. click shift + restore, point to 4.1 firmware.
5. Itunes will restore your phone. At the end, Itunes will give you a 1015 error. click okay and close Itunes.
6. Open tiny umbrella, select your phone on the upper left hand corner, then look the the upper right hand, click exit recovery.
7. Your phone will boot up normally to activation screen.

If you want iOS 5 you have to use 5.0.1 since 5.0 can't be used anymore ;)
If you want to preserve your current bb use sn0wbreeze if not use redsn0w

Do you have old bootrom or the new? Maybe you're trying to jailbreak it with the wrong ipsw? Or choosing tethered when your 3GS has the old bootrom? :) I dunno, just laying it out there, just in case :)

88143 are the first 5 of my serial number so I guess it's old boot room? I tried 4.1, 5.0 and 4.3 for ipsw's. I just can't get it. I keep getting the 3194 even after changing the hosts file. :(

Can you try it on a different computer?
I was thinking that this could be the problem. I'm going to have to try it. Thanks for the new ideas. =)

I'm also getting a new phone next week that hasn't been upgraded to 5.0.1 yet, so I hope that one will work out a little better.
