Yosemite works perfectly with gmail, save for the gmail label treatment (which is tricky to accommodate in a consistent way to begin with). And do I read it correctly, these guys complain that toggling All Mail on and off will force a full redownload of your mail? Why is that a bad thing? I trigger a full mail resync every time a new OS X comes out. It takes less then an hour for my 15000 mails and happens in the background anyway.

All in all, its a blog post to convince users to buy Postbox. I did try Postbox for a few days and I switched back to Apple Mail. Its treatment for quotes was weird, attachments didn't want the way I wanted and search was also missing some stuff.

The article How to make Gmail work well with Mail that still covers the basics and still works. Plus with most Gmail users you probably keep all you received email in the InBox. So before using Gmail with Mail move all that InBox email to a folder you created in Gmail before linking it to Mail. This will help for the future syncing with IMAP.

Gmail is a mess. I can't believe people with Macs are still using gmail when there are better solutions that actually support IMAP. It's seems kinda Stockholm Syndrome like. I keep seeing complaints about Mail handling Gmail's poor implementation of IMAP when it seems to never occur to them that maybe you should just drop gmail since it's actually the one at fault.

Even when it works in Mail it's always going to be slower at everything due to the workaroundsand hacks that had to be made to support it. Plus there's the fact that labels, archives, tabs, and other poorly done gmail features will never work the same cross different types of devices and the web because they don't follow the IMAP specs.

And it's not just IMAP. You're losing features and capabilities by using their contacts and calendar solutions as well because they don't follow the open standards of cardDAV and calDAV either. And there is no free push for google's proprietary solutions.

Just abandon gmail altogether. It was cool when it was released, cause it seemed something new and had a lot of space. Nowadays though....

What do you consider to be a better (best) email option?

Works fine for me, but I mainly just access gmail on my iPhone or on the website in Chrome. It did work to copy emails back to an exchange account after the server deleted them when I imported them into gmail. I also use Mail for my school Gmail account because I don't like switching accounts in chrome whenever possible.

    ----------

You mean Hotmail? No... MSN? No, not that one. Live?! Microsoft needs to decide on a name already.

Personally I won't use it after I was given a Live account for school and could not for the life of me figure out how to get it into Mail on Leopard. Never had that kind of trouble with Exchange or gmail.

What the article said is that Mavericks Mail totally fouled up the method of dealing with with emails that the user applies two or more labels, i.e. intending to save copies of the same email in multiple folders.

In other words, if you're the sort of simple user who keeps all your emails in the inbox, and rarely applies labels, and never applies more than one label to one email -- then, for you, Mavericks Mail will be great.

I have to file certain emails in multiple folders for my work, and so I'm the sort of user where Mavericks Mail creates a mess.

The point of starting this thread is to say that Apple's quirky way of interfacing with Gmail's equally quirky labelling system -- that aspect -- is unlikely to be fixed in Yosemite Mail, because Apple chartered its course, and they're not going to backtrack. That's my take on it.

If so, then we're likely to see the continuation of the Gmail IMAP mess in Yosemite that started in Mavericks.

As said, this only fouls up people who use multiple labels per one email. If you're not that person, then Apple Mail should be fine.

This is way different than Hotmail or Live. It's like saying iCloud it's the same a MobileMe. Just because the same company made them means nothing.

I just figured I'd give a good one that isn't Gmail. I'd say it's better, but that's just opinion. Never had a problem with Outlook and the mail so in OSX. Heck, iCloud has given me more trouble then Outlook.
