The Unlimited data plan was remove on June 7. So as a new customer you must choose from one of the new data plans.

So i am new to ATT and New to the iPhone. I would like to get unlimited data but for some reason cant? Ive never had it before? So why cant I get it? 2 GB is not enough
Before the iPhone 4 was released AT&T axed the unlimited data plans in favor a tiered data plan structure. People who already had unlimited plans could keep them or choose a newer and limited plan but wouldn't be able to change back to the unlimited plan. But new AT&T customers may only choose from the new (not unlimited) data plans.
Why the hell did they do this? I could see making cheaper plans, but save the unlimited.
Too much strenuous activity happening over their network, and besides, only 1% of iPhone users go over 2gb a month.

Why do you need more than 2GB? Technically, you'd be spending only $5 more for 3GB vs the old $30 unlimited plan if you were to go over.
I've been using my phone for almost 5 days now and I've only hit 90MB. The only reason I even used that much is because I've been watching streaming videos on my phone. The rest is downloading applications, web browsing, and uploading pictures to twitter.
Only reason I kept unlimited is if/when the Nexflix app comes to the iPhone. Otherwise, I barely used 2GB of data all last year.
How common is free wifi where you live? A friend of mine downgraded to the 500MB plan, but his entire town has free wifi (practically).
Well right now, not that much, only my house and my girlfriends house because most wifi is password protected here. But during the school year, my college campus has campus wide free wifi, so should I use the 512 during the school year?
It really depends on a couple of factors. First, how often do you use WiFi versus 3G. Second, what kind of data do you use. To use me as an example -- I have WiFi at work and at home, so the only time I use 3G is when I'm neither at work nor at home (typically that means while commuting on the train). In addition, I do not stream audio or video. About 5 out of 6 months I come in under 500 MB for the month.
There isn't 512MB plan. It's between 2GB and 200MB (edited). There is no way I can get by with 256MB, buy my GF's data usage history (you can check usage graph on AT&T website if you were an existing customer) showed 50MB - 150MB per month so it can be good for some people.
I'd say get 2GB plan for the first month or two, then see how much you use.
I noticed that my data has increased alot since i've gotten the iPhone 4 which is why i'm glad i kept unlimited.

Oh its only 200mb? I thought it was 500, thats my bad. Yeah I definately will prob go with the 2 GB. I mean what takes up alot of usage? Like I just plan to surf the web occasionaly, Facebook, play/buy apps/ and maybe some youtube? What uses alot that i should avoid?

There is a way to get unlimited back but you have to have an original iPhone to do it.

It doesn't sound like you'll be using a whole lot of data. You might be able to stay under 200mb a month.
