iPhone Unlock 3GS Help :).

Hi everyone!

As my username states, I am seriously old school when it comes to cell phones. I have *just* acquired my friends old 3GS (which is a significant upgrade from my old cell haha). It was previously on the Telus network in Canada, and they refuse to unlock it, even for a fee.

SO I'm left to do it the hard way 😉

It has been jailbroken using redsnow with no issues.

HOWEVER, here's my snag...

My 3GS was manufactured in the 20th week of 2011. (first 5 of serial # is 88120) It is iOS 6.0.1, and Baseband 05.16.07.

Am I able to flash with iPad baseband, and then downgrade for the unlock? Or will I brick my phone?

NM!! I was able to use the ipad baseband and unlock my phone 🙂 YIPPEE

Now my next question is -- I'm on iOS 1.4.1. Now that it's unlocked and on the iPad baseband, can I change the baseband? Can I upgrade to iOS 6.0.1? Does this phone have to stay jailbroken forever?

you can downgrade the BB to 5.13.04 which you can unlock with ultrasn0w, you than have full functioning GPS as well.

you can also buy an IMEI unlock online for a few $ and have it permanently unlocked.

you can upgrade to 6.01 while preserving your ipad or downgraded 05.13.04 using redsn0w.

I am restoring while preserving the baseband via Redsn0w now.

I assume that unless I pay for an IMEI perm. unlock ($60 for the carrier it was with!), that the phone will have to remain jailbroken for as long as I use it?

Can I still add apps I've previously purchased through the appstore?

Yes, I know quite a bit technically, but am not familiar with the jailbreak process beyond being able to DO it lol

Yes, in order to stay unlocked you need to be JB and have ultrasnow from cydia installed on your phone. And yes you can still use appstore apps, buy them, sync them with itunes etc...
 
upgrade to ios 6??

OK new problem 🙂

My phone is unlocked and working perfect.

However, it is now on baseband 05.13.04.

When I try to restore to ios 6 using redsn0w, it tells me I don't have an available ios 6 shsh blob.

I clearly don't want to stay on ios 4.1, as i can't use any of the apps I'd like to!!

HELP!!!!
 
No shsh blobs...

That's the problem. I have tried fetching, I have tried everything - and I don't HAVE ios 6 blobs!!! Not locally, not anywhere. Does this mean I am stuck at ios 4??? I want to cry !!!!!

maybe next time you want to jailbreak first read up on the stuff

Download 6.01 IPSW
now use redsn0w
Extras/SHSH blobs/New

alternative is to download TinyUmbrella
In the advanced tab UNcheck request SHSH from Cydia and than in the main page hit Save SHSH

Now use redsn0w to submit the locally saved SHSH
Extras/SHSH blobs/submit

When finally on 6.01 it will be a tethered jailbreak

Do this or just get rid of the jailbreak and pay one of the unlockers to get it permanently unlocked, that's the better option.
 
Yeah I could do without the insults. I'm a grown woman who's finding this entire process frustrating, and came here honestly looking for help.

Thank you for your suggestions. unfortunately, when I restored to 6.0.1, it doesn't work. I cannot go into the jailbreak menu on Redsn0w at all, as it tells me my ipsw isn't supported.

I'm at a loss.
 
If you pay for an IMEI unlock, which you mentioned $60 on ebay, then you will not need to stay jailbroken and you never have to worry about basebands, ultrasnow, ios, redsnow etc. It would be considered factory unlocked and you can just update and restore using itunes.

However, if you are still adamant in keeping jailbreak and unlock using ultrasnow and jailbreak, then follow TriJetHeros steps. He is being nice to you, if you cant get it to work, then you shouldn't be messing with your phone, without the proper prior research, which is widely available with simple google searches.
However, there are many guides on iclarified.com

redsn0w 09.15b3 does not support the 6.01 fully, you need to download the 6.0 IPSW as well and point redsn0w to that 6.0 IPSW

go into redsn0w Extras/Select IPSW and select the 6.0 IPSW

now got to main menu and select jailbreak, it wil work
