Jail breaking does NOT make a phone slow!
All it does is add the Cydia icon to your springboard, that's ALL.
Individual installed apps from Apple App Store, and Apps from Cydia might make your phone slow, but the actual JB does NOT 😀

With the low demand for those older phones, there have to be lots of FUL 3G phones for sale.

jailbreaking doesnt make it slow, its what you install that makes it slow
just download ultrasn0w from Cydia, you shouldnt notice a speed difference if thats all you get.

The iphone 3G is slow as hell on anything higher than 3.1.3 anyway.
Installing just ultrasnow like the bro said above wont make much difference.
