Okay so I bought a 3G iphone with the unlock chip. However it seems as though a few times a day it says "no sim" which bugs me. It sometimes wont go away for hours.

Anyways is there a real difference between the 2G and the 3G iPhones? I know the cosmetics and internet data speed are different but is there anything else?

The cosmetics like you mention are different, and there's a reason - the all-plastic back on the 3G gives you a better signal. :)

Having used both the 3G and the original iPhone, I must say: I like the original better.

    Pros:

    - metal body
    - "feels better" (feels more solid/expensive)
    - excellent battery life
    - can be unlocked reliably
    - well documented, well understood by hackers

    Cons:

    - not LATESTOMGSHINY
    - no 3G
    - recessed headphone jack

Personally, I don't care about 3G speeds (I don't do anything bandwidth-intensive, just SSH, e-mail, and the occasional web page), and I didn't want my device feeling like a cheap toy (thus my dislike of the plastic backs), so I went back to my original iPhone. The software unlock's a huge plus too, as I like knowing that the phone will "just work" wherever I am in the world.

    YMMV though.

Both phones can run the same versions of Firmware with only differences being code for 3G and GPS. :)

I guess it depends on usage as you say. I had the original iPhone but I now can't live without the GPS in my 3g iPhone. It has come in handy SO many times. not to mention it's great since I browse webpages constantly
, use Pandora, etc. The recessed jack thing killed me on the original too. I hated going over a friend house and "Oh crap, I forgot my adapter" would frequently come out of my mouth when I wanted to play some tunes.

What makes you think I was referring to the software? ;)
