Hi guys,
When will unlocked (carrier-free) iPhone 7 be available in Apple Stores?

You can buy one right now. Just ask for the Verizon model in the color and capacity of your choice.

That's interesting. If I buy a Verizon model I am by no means attached to the carrier? I can simply put my AT&T SIM and start using the phone?

So basically:
1) Buy Verizon iPhone 7 in Apple Store and you are good to go.
2) Buy Verizon iPhone 7 in any other store, activate it with a Verizon SIM and you are good to go.
Both Apple and Verizon sell the carrier models. So if you buy from either Apple or Verizon the Verizon iPhone 7/7+ is unlocked. I think that is true if you buy from the Verizon franchises (VARs) too.

I am not sure about buying from Costco.

So what is the point of buying an unlocked iPhone 7 when Apple launches it?

In the past, the Verizon model was not always the same as the SIM free model. For instance, for the iP6/6+, the Verizon model lacks Sprint's Spark Band 41 but the SIM free model has it. For the iP6s/6s+ the Verizon model lacks AT&T's Band 30 but the SIM free model has it.

This year the Verizon model has all of the LTE bands.

So does the Sprint model since they are the same hardware wise. It is just that the Sprint model is locked to Sprint unless you use it on Sprint for at least 50 days and get Sprint to unlock it for you.

This year there is no difference b/t the Verizon model and the SIM free model. That wasn't true for the previous 2 years.

You can buy the sim-free model today online. I don't know why they don't sell it from the start though.
