SC, thank God
I have an unlocked 2G getting nearly two years old, no issues yet with battery but does anyone know if when you send the phone back to Apple for battery exchange will it return re-locked and maybe upgraded to newest OS??

i wonder about that too. do we have to un-jailbreak and lock it again before sending it in, then unlock and jailbreak again when we get it back so apple wont bitch at us?

Every firmware for the 2G is unlockable as far as I know so there is no harm in upgrading. I would restore it to factory settings so that apple could not deny you service because of a jailbreak.
