I picked up an red unlocked iPhone se this pat Friday from BB. First thing I noticed is that a Verizon SIM card came preinstalled in it, but when I placed my att sim in it activated and worked without issues. Today I was researching the the SE’s model numbers and every site indicates that the Unlocked red 64GB SE should be MX9Q2LL/A, however, mine is MX9M2LL/A. These same sites including everymac points to me being sold a Verizon version, yet my att card works fine.

if you own a unlocked red SE2 64GB, can you share your model number. I may have to exchange it if I’ve been sold a Verizon SE when I thought I was being sold an unlocked one.

thanks

In the middle of several books.
I bought mine unlocked from Apple (MX9Q2LL/A).

If your phone came with a Verizon SIM installed and it is working with AT&T, it is probably unlocked. Stick an active SIM from another carrier in the phone to confirm ublocked status. No need to return if it is unlocked already.

I bought mine unlocked from Target and sure enough it came with a Verizon sim. Works fine on att though. I was wondering about it.

I can confirm it works with AT&T and Metro, so technically it’s unlocked. I’m just curious as to why Best Buy website lists the MX9M2LL/A model as the unlocked red 64GB variant when it comes preinstalled with a Verizon SIM card. Unless of course, buying from Apple directly is why there are variances in the model numbers.

Odd.

You have an unlocked Verizon iPhone SE. All Verizon iPhone models are sold with the GSM bands unlocked and will work with AT&T, T-Mobile, and other GSM carriers.

Any iPhone that has a pre-installed Nano-SIM is what is know as a carrier model. MX9M2LL/A is a Verizon carrier version. It is listed as such on the BestBuy web site. Again it is unlocked for GSM. The MX9Q2LL/A version is know as the Apple SIM Free version often incorrectly referenced as the Unlocked version.

For some models of the iPhone there are internal differences (radios), for the iPhone SE 2020, all versions share the same Apple Model Number #A2275 for the USA/Canada/Puerto Rico/U.S. Virgin Islands.

Well explained and this makes sense. So essentially the phone is unlocked, although when I revisited BB‘s website and pulled up the red 64gb unlocked model MX9M2LL and viewed specifications it states that it’s carrier unlocked and no mention the it’s a Verizon unlocked phone. Am I missing something.

Thanks Dave!

I don’t really understand why you would advertise it as unlocked even though it’s a Verizon phone - whether it’s unlocked or not. Just confusing. But it works fine so not complaining!

Correct it is a carrier unlocked part number MX9M2LL and you are not missing anything since you purchased an unlocked iPhone SE. You get a bonus pre-installed Verizon Nano-SIM the hardware is exactly the same.

There is nothing specific to Verizon other then the pre-installed Nano-SIM. The different part numbers are really only relevant to the Apple fulfillment channel for most of us. Only the Unlocked SIM Free versions don't have a pre-installed Nano-SIM from a major carrier.

Again well explained. Also just to ease my concerns I popped 3 different/active carrier sims into it, and they all activated and were ready to use without any hiccups.

Thanks!

The one thing I read about VZW is if you get an iPhone through them, it is locked for 60 days. Also, if you get a VZW iPhone through a third party and activate with a VZW SIM, it will be locked for 60 days. But since you swapped the AT&T SIM in without activating the VZW one, it was still unlocked. The other carrier with a hitch is if you get an AT&T iPhone with AT&T installments, it is locked until paid off. I don't believe T-Mobile or Sprint ever lock their iPhones.

Does MX9P2LL/A mean it's unlocked?

Emphasis above. Walmart's AT&T and Verizon iPhones use the same part numbers with SIM card in separate package but afaik, those phones are under US Reseller Flex policy and follows the unlock policy of the first SIM card inserted.

It’s a pretty good thing no has been screwed over by this. Had I turned on the phone before I took the Verizon sim out, what would have happened? I can imagine a literal nightmare of trying to get it sorted out.

I expect nothing as you have the Verizon unlocked version.

Mind, I know at Apple Stores, the device lock/unlocked status is set when you check out. I believe Apple keeps a database of SIM lock status and the device IMEI gets set to unlocked if you pay full price or buy on iUP or something. I wonder if other retailers have that capability as well.

If I'm not mistaken, Verizon versions are now locked for the first 60 days or something upon it being activated with Verizon. Not sure about it being activated on other carriers from day 1.

I'm just glad I'm not in the US. There's so much confusion about this locking thing. My head hurts just reading about it LOL.

If you activate with the original SIM on a Verizon iPhone. you are locked for 60 days before it will auto unlock.
Also, if you do AT&T installments for an AT&T iPhone, you are locked until you pay it off.
I haven't read of any other carriers ever locking their iPhones anymore.

To take this one step further, this basically means if someone wanted to switch from a carrier such as T-Mobile to Verizon the phone would work on the new carrier, correct? Basically the new iPhone SE 2020 has all of the radio bands necessary to operate on all US-based (and likely a majority of worldwide) carriers.

A good article on all of this can be found on Verizon's website: https://www.verizon.com/articles/what-are-phone-bands-and-why-do-they-matter/
