I'm planning to order an iPhone X online from my country and a friend will be picking it up from America in the next few days before they leave. It does depend on the availability for pick up.

I talked to Apple to confirm that both the T-Mobile and Verizon versions are unlocked if the full price is paid and that they do not require a contract if it's purchased directly from Apple. I would have to pick "activate later" with the Verizon version for this.

Verizon version should work with any CDMA or GSM network and the T-Mobile version with any GSM network - as long as the phone supports the bands/frequencies.

I have contacted the local network and they confirmed that the T-Mobile iPhone X is compatible if the phone isn't locked to a network.

Can someone confirm that they're truly unlocked and not tied to the respective networks?

If you pay in full and select "Activate Later" like you mentioned, they will be unlocked and not tied to the carrier at all. Just put your sim in when you receive the phone, make sure you enter no carrier information when you purchase.

I have used my VZW iPhone X with Verizon, Cricket (ATT), and now SimpleMobile(TMobile) sims with no problems.

So if you "activate" an unlocked phone it locks it to that network?

how do you undo that when you want to sell it?

All full-priced iPhones bought from Apple are unlocked. However, for you the T-Mobile may be the better bet, since until the SIM-Free model is released, to reserve the Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint models technically you need to enter in an account number for one of those carriers. You don’t need to do so to reserve the T-Mobile version.

But Apple.com has changed this since Friday and no longer required to enter your carrier info for ATT, Verizon and Sprint.

Nice. I didn’t know that.

Why are you suggesting to select activate later then?
That appears to be the way to reserve a phone for “device only” purchase in the store. You can activate it with an existing SIM.

Thanks for the replies! I ended up getting the T-Mobile version.

The Verizon version - despite selecting the activate later option - did not allow pickup by a third party.
