If you buy the sim free version it will have band 30 and will be unlocked. You can also buy the AT&T version and pay full price to get the same result.

It will be if you pay full price for it, which is what MacDevil7334 said.

The "AT&T model" just means that the phone will support band 30 and will come with an AT&T SIM card in it. If you pay for it full price, or through the IUP - it will be fully unlocked and you can take that AT&T SIM card out and put any SIM card in the phone.

No if you buy the phone full price or on the IUP it will be completely unlocked. No need to contact AT&T to unlock it. Just switch out the sims and you are good to go

This is true as I purchased an AT&T 6S with Apple and when I went to restore it my iTunes screen read, "Congratulations. Your iPhone is unlocked" (or, some variation of that).

Whether you are paying full retail for the AT&T model on apple's online store or by going into the store, it will still be unlocked out of the box. You do need to connect it to iTunes in order to get the confirmation page that it is unlocked. If you want to do Apples upgrade plan you will need to go into an Apple Store where they will check your credit to see if you qualify for it.

What if you get your phone replaced and the Genius Bar person turns it on?

No, the Sim Free model was never part of Apples upgrade program, only the carrier models are.

I had one of iPhones replaced by Apple one time that was AT&T unlocked. The replacement that I received from them was also unlocked.

Do you have to let apple know before you go the apple store to buy a iPhone or can you just walk in and buy one?I think your right you can get att iPhone unlocked but you have to look at the model name:)

Assuming you are just going to get the 6S (Not Plus), then you can easily walk to the apple store and get the one you want.

Just went through this in another thread... SIM-free iPhones are able to be bought through IUP. The store just needs to also activate a new SIM card onto your carrier account. I did this when I got an iPhone 6s for my Verizon account because I wanted the band 30 support.

Also, all iPhones purchased through IUP are unlocked. It's just that the AT&T and sim-free models have the band 30 support.

Simply plug in your iPhone to iTunes and restore. You will get a congratulation, your iPhone has been unlocked message.

I'm pretty sure you cans till insert a nonatt sim card and surely it would work just fine out of the box.

It'll be unlocked out of the box. You don't have to "do" anything to it to unlock it. Just start using it. Connecting to iTunes doesn't unlock it, it just tells you that it is unlocked.
