    Hey guys:

There have been a lot of anxious people out there that have asked whether or not upgrading to 2.0 firmware retains the unlock state of the iPhone. Sorry if this is a duplicate thread, I did do a search.

So - my story - I have an iPhone which was bought from the Apple Store in the Christiana Mall, Delaware back in September 2007. I unlocked it with AnySIM on 1.0.2, and have subsequently upgraded the firmware over the various revisions until getting to 1.1.4.

As the iPhone 2.0 made its way online (via a forum on here), I thought I'd give it a shot and see if it is possible to have the 2.0 firmware on my unlocked iPhone.

I can categorically stated that upgrading to 2.0 RELOCKS and jails the phone as most people expected. Meaning, no service and the ability to use any function except to make an emergency call only.

I have tried this evening twice to ensure that I can go back down successfully to 1.1.4 and can.

So - WAIT for the dev community to have a play with the firmware and wait a week or two. The firmware will be cracked soon!

You're hours late, man. The Dev Team has already jailbroken and unlocked 2.0.

But have they released a public tool or guide? Many people went through various routes to uolock or jailbreak. One of the methods shown by the dev team won't always work.

Tall - really - does that mean we'll get a release tonight? :) Or, when will it be released?

Its common sense that upgrading relocks and rejails the phone.

    Why?

Because every firmware update you install puts a new "modem" (the bit that makes calls on the phone) and its locked by apple so updating/restoring to a higher firmware than you already have has that effect of relocking.

As for jailbreaking - a phone is always jailed again by a restore or update unless you have some way to jailbreak it which there is not any way at this time.

However the DevTeam appear to have jailbroken and unlocked 2.0 using pwnagetool and an update to that should be released soon (but I don't know when!).

Which phone are we talking about anyway?

The problem is, with the 1st gen going to 2.0 and being jailbroke - what apps are going to work? Any? I recall going to 1.1.4 nuked most all the apps and they had to either be manually tweaked to work (and most everyone had their own idea how to do that), or re-written by the developer.

Are the apps even going to work on 2.0?

I wonder if iTunes will be able to tell what country you're from and simply unlocks the phone when the region checks out. Or at least locks it into a certain country's supported carriers. I'd be able to live with that.

It would be a BIG slap in the face to the early adopters who unlocked theirs (and made iPhones so popular), if they can't at least keep using it in their Now supported countries.

I just hope that the Dev team can provide a workaround for the app store to work... However, unlikely because I assume that the charges for the apps go directly to your ATT account... unless you purchase them through iTunes, then I would it would germane to hack it.

My guess would be it is a lot like purchasing music via iTunes, since the app store is built into iTunes. I think the app store should still work with an unlocked iPhone.

You buy the apps from Apple. They get the money.

I'm flying out of town Saturday for a week long trip, so I NEED my phone working. Is the unlocking tool out? If I upgrade my iPhone tonight to 2.0 (I'd do a complete restore and upgrade- currently on 1.1.3, unlocked to T-Mobile), can I be sure I can have it working tomorrow? Where do I get the tool?

    Thanks :)

^I'd hold off on upgrading if you need an operational phone for the weekend.

That's about what I had in mind, but if there was a successful tool I was thinking about biting the bullet. I'll probably just hold off :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the developer get all the money from the Apps that they sell? I thought Apple wasn't collecting any money on this. That's the way it is for the free Apps (obviously).

Apple keeps 30% of price to run store. But 30% of free is $0.

Who is your service provider? Isn't it AT&T? Why does your phone need to be unlocked in order to have service and make normal calls?

I don't want to speak for the guy, but I think you can buy the apps from the App Store already and just have them sit in iTunes (or he already has the 2.0 firmware)... but it is possible to buy the apps without having 2.0, you just cant' do anything with them.
