I put in an unlock request to ATT for my iPhone 6s because I am selling it in wake of getting the iPhone X. I just got an e-mail that my request was approved. But I am confused. Do I need to do anything else? In the e-mail it says if I have an ATT SIM do a backup and restore. If I have a non-ATT SIM just insert it. Do I have to do anything besides resetting my phone before selling it? It should be unlocked without me doing anything more, correct?

The phone is good to go! You can just reset your phone and sell it.

If you want to verify it is unlocked, insert any other carrier's sim and make sure the phone detects it. That shouldn't be necessary though.

Okay great! I also thought it was just a database thing and nothing I had to do on my end. I don't have another SIM so I'll just reset the phone and remove my old SIM before selling it.

Reset it. If you are using iTunes, plug it in when doing that: you should see a message re: "phone is unlocked".

Will that restore the backup or wipe the phone?
You don't restore from a back up. ***Make sure you have Find My iPhone turned OFF before you begin *** You do the Restore to set back to factory specs and to wipe the phone. After the restore finishes it will say iPhone is unlocked and then you disconnect. Your phone will be on the Hello screen and wiped. After you sell the phone, go to iCloud.com and select settings and delete the iPhone 6 from your devices.
