There is a no commitment option for the iPhone 5 on AT&T website.

no commitment does not mean unlocked. no commitment means you pay full price for a locked phone but have no contract to sign or extend. unlocked means unlocked. though you would think at&t would unlock the new iphone 5 if they're unlocking older iphones out of contract.

Well it is locked but AT&T or Apple can unlock it (like the 4S previously) right ?

So we can nearly say that it is an unlocked iPhone. The only difference is that we have to ask for the unlock I guess.

When you purchase at full price with no commitment you have right to ask for unlock code. Last year when i purchased with no commitment i received a factory unlock iPhone.

So I just wanna make sure I'm getting this... If I buy the iPhone from AT&T with the "No Commitment" thing, and call them up on monday, or walk to one of their stores, I have the right to get an unlock free of charge? I want the phone, but since I'm an international student who won't be living in the US next year I need a GSM phone that I can use in another country, and preferably with Straight Talk while I'm here in the US.

They wont sell you ATT no commitment iphones unless you're an ATT customer.

Ah, allright. Thanks for the answer. I guess I'll just have to hope that Apple releases it contract free as soon as possible. My iPhone 4S is starting to feel a little too old ;)

Anyway.. It was all going well in the AT&T checkout process until I got to the SSN field. I am an international student so I don't have any SSN. Deposits are not allowed as well.. Guess I'll have to wait for the unlocked version on Apple's website

A fellow International student cursing the contracts. Hopefully It won't take long. I'm hoping for them to have some contract free next friday if I wait in line, but I'm probably dreaming.

Just be sure that no commitment mean also unlocked
I think after see what they do I am not allegeable for update now so I have to pay almost full price and start the 2 year
if you buy full price they don't start your 2 year now
just check before you buy

Anyway I would still need a nanosim card & my carrier T-Mobile does not provide any at that time. I'd like to switch to H2O soon.

I was determined to get a no commitment phone again and not wait in lines. I could not get the AT&T site to work and the Apple site didn't show no commitment options. So I did what I hate doing...made a phone call to AT&T. Spent 1.5 hours waiting until a rep came on. I told him I wanted a 64gb black iPhone 5 at the no commitment price and said I will only order if it delivers on the 21st. The answers were all yes so I ordered. Same as last year, $892, ouch. I dislike contracts more though. Plus I plan to have it unlocked the moment I receive it.

Anyways, just sharing my experience. Now watch me get a confirmation email showing a later than 21st delivery, then I would be pissed.

No commitment does not mean unlocked. It just means no contract and you pay the full price for a phone that very well may be locked to ATT.

It was just an extra bonus that people found out that last year, the phone happens to be unlocked.

So I ordered a no-commitment iphone5, with the smallest plan possible... from some things I have read, no commitment iphones in the past come factory unlocked anyways.. see http://www.idownloadblog.com/2011/10/16/att-iphone-4s-already-unlocked/

and also here:

hopefully i can cancel within 3 days and avoid paying any activation or monthly fees without returning the device. Even if I can't, I am only out the 59.99 extra for that first month of service, which is probably fine until T-mobile gets nano-sim in stock. Even if the phone doesn't come unlocked, the no-commitment device should be able to be unlocked via request after cancelling the first month. At least this way I have something to play with on launch day.

So how exactly are people placing these no commitment orders?

I tried calling ATT and they said their systems are down so they can't help. I also tried on the website but it always just redirects me to the upgrade section.

Yes, I would like to know too. AT&T always shows me the price with a 2 year contract to upgrade and there is no option for a no-commitment phone.

I will help you out as some people are completely confused here.

Upgrade iPhone = Tied to carrier and cheapest price point which extends contract two years (your current contract has to be eligible for this)

No commitment iPhone = Tied to carrier (not unlocked) and cost is around $200 more than the upgrade pricing. No contract extension. This is for people currently tied to a carrier contract but are not yet eligible for the upgrade pricing.

Unlocked iPhone = Not tied to any carrier, costs $699 and up depending on storage

You can only buy a no commitment iPhone if you currently have an account with either Sprint, AT&T or Verizon. Apple will be selling unlocked iPhones in the US but have not given any timetable. Odds are good these unlocked phones won't go on sale until at least October maybe even later.

I upgraded last October with AT&T and am not eligible this year so I purchased the no commitment version at $540 plus tax for the 32GB version. This phone is not factory unlocked but tied to AT&T and I can't get an unlock from AT&T because I am currently in a contract with them. When my contract expires, AT&T will unlock the phone. I will be going the eBay route and getting the phone permanently factory unlocked using the IMEI number (paying about $10 for the unlock code). So actually I am saving a bit rather than waiting for the $799 32GB to go on sale through Apple.

EDIT: Info is only for US customers. Unlocked phones will be available in other parts of the world.

No-commitment phones from an Apple Store are unlocked. But from AT&T they are locked. At least this is how the 4S worked. Since you can now request an unlock on AT&T's website, it isn't a big deal either way.
