I put a T-Mobile Sim Card in the phone and a message on the phone said I had to activate it via itunes.

I've seen several posts that say the ONLY sure way to tell if a phone is unlocked is to borrow a friend's sim card from another carrier. If I DID that and activated it, would it still be good when it went back in my friend's cell phone. Unless I knew for sure, I don't think I would want to activate it just for an "unlock test".

By the way, I did unlock my ATT phone, but i also never received a message from ATT as the instructions say. I did or so I was told, confirm it with an ATT tech who also told me that he saw a note that I DID get the unlocking notice.

You wouldn't be using the friends sim card to activate anything. If you install your friends sim card and it gets a signal and you can use it, then your phone is unlocked. If the phone is unlocked you don't have to do anything. So this has no impact on your friends sim.

AT&T will say they'll send a message, but if you go to the web site and check the status it will likely say unlock complete.
