Unlocking Iphone to avoid signing a new ATT contract.

Okay, so I have ATT already and have 2 months left on my contract. I am on my aunts contract since my family had sprint and I hated it. But in December when my aunts contract is up my family is switching to ATT so I will be with them. Therefore, I can not sign a new two year contract if I buy an iphone. I would have to wait to sign the contract in December. So could I buy an iphone, unlock it, pop in my current att sim and use the iphone. I already have a data plan on my phone.
