unneccessary disk activity

I have noticed my mac pro is making small bursts of disk activity noise since connecting to an ipod (this may be just coincidental I don't know). Also it seems to be worse when mail is running. and in fact whenever it occurs (about every minute or so) some words come up on the activity viewer in mail but so quickly that I cannot read them. Is it anything to worry about? or am I being parnoid?

maybe it is checking for new mail?

No it checks for new mail every 5 minutes and this is happening every thirty secs or so.
