I updated my info:
Amazon charges tax only in Washington. Macconnection may seem cheaper, but make sure the price is cheaper after any taxes. ebaY seems to be the best deal. Don't forget to get cash back from a site like Mrrebates.com for another 3% on ebaY and 1% at the Apple store. You also save on taxes in most cases. I estimate refurbs 32GB to cost ~$249 late this year to early next. They have 2% @ Macmall and MacConnection.

Sorry, ITASOR said:
Amazon collects tax in a few states now:
Quote:
Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax.

I think both of these should be added to the OP.

Anyone know what the best deal is for purchasing one being shipped to NY??
Thanks

Apparently Newegg is usually the best (and only) deal for New York customers, but they don't have the 4G listed on their site yet. Wait a few more days and we'll see what happens.

I don't know how much of a deal this is, but make sure you buy your ipod with a credit card such as american express if possible. They give a pretty cool incentive of extending your manufacturer's warranty by a year as long as you keep the receipt and your credit statement with the purchase, and they're pretty reliable in my experience.

Just a tip...

+1
The Amex buyer's assurance program is great. I'm currently getting my laptop serviced through it.

Good advice - mahalos :)

Most of the better gold or platinum cards will double the warranty up to an additional year. Thus its not just an amex feature...

Does anyone know if Amazon charges sales tax if a iPod Touch is being shipped to Michigan as I live in the UK and am planning on buying the new 64GB version on the US Amazon site and have it shipped to a friend who lives in Michigan who I usually ship items to from companies that don't ship to the UK and she ships them onto me (in other words, a forwarding address) marked on the packaging as a "gift", thus avoiding various taxes that I'd have to pay like VAT (Over here, the 64GB has gone up to £329.99 because VAT is going up to 20% in January thanks to the Coalition Government which has already become unpopular in such a short space of time thanks to their continual breaking of promises!) and import duty.

I've already got $35.01 left in online giftcards from another friend which I'll be putting towards the purchase and I'll probably wait another few weeks before it goes down in price a bit more even though it will be handy for my university studies.

It'll be the first time I'll have bought an Apple product, and unlike some of the rabid Apple fanboys/girls (who quite frankly come across as being scarily like the people being parodied in The Simpsons a couple of seasons back), I'm only interested in it (and a 2nd Gen iPad) for the Apps side of things as well as playing the odd Anime/Kamen Rider/Super Sentai fansub or podcast while going to university.

If I had to choose between 13% tax and living in the Yukon, I'd suck it up and fork over the cash. ;)

Jk, jk. I'm sure the Yukon is lovely. :)

Haha it's really quite nice up here! As long as you don't mind the annoying drunks, and the somewhat cold winters. (Winter up here isn't as bad as most people think)

Anyways, does amazon ship up to Canada? I'm going to assume so, but I thought I'd ask anyways.

Edit: No they can't. Please don't tell me us Canadians are going to have to wait longer till' we get the new iPods. My 2nd gens headphone jack is screwed and I want a new one ASAP.

I called MacMall to ask when they'd be in stock and they said September 30th, shipping a week or so after. I'm already locked in with an order for two with them. Oh well.
2 Free $10 chargers + $20 off ipods + AMEX extended warranty and its worth it.

Damn! I hope Amazon gets it faster then that! I might just cancel if it ends up taking until October to get it.

Hah, you think October is bad! I just emailed Amazon to inquire about my estimated delivery date because my order staus page still doesn't nave one. they told me I would have it NOVEMBER 2nd! Almost 2 months away. I'm tempted just to cancel to the order and pay the extra $30 and pick one up at a local bestbuy/walmart.

I'm starting to think they give you the chargers just to make sure you can't cancel. They shipped them this morning and charged my credit card for the rest of the order. :p

I don't plan to order one until Oct anyway. I am going to jamaica sept 22-29 so it would not have arrived in time before my trip. Maybe by then the price will be even cheaper..doubt it tho

Does anybody status information still say "backordered" from Macconnections or Mac mall or any other site they ordered from besides apple?

1. You can get 5% cashback from apple.com if you go through shopdiscover.com (and obviously pay with a Discover card)

2. However, I think it's better to get the 1 year extended warranty by using a different credit card. I think the AmEx extended warranty program is much less of a hassle to use than Visa or MC.

3. If you live in a no-sales-tax state, keep an eye on your local Costco, they will probably be charging $380 for the 64GB etc.

I just called macconnections and the representative told me that they were going to have the ipods in stock on monday (Sept. 13) so people who ordered there should be getting their ipods by the end of the week or the middle of the next week. :)

Updated, thanks.

I have a friend who has a lot of Amazon credit, so sounds like he's gonna sell it to me and I'll get a nice discount off the already low price.
