I read my emails several times a day either on my IPad or IPhone. When I turn on my IPhone it shows in the little red circle that I have over 2500 unread emails. Someone told me that since my mail acct is through Yahoo I need to change something from IPOP to IMAP. If this is correct how do I do that. Is it done on my phone or do I log into Yahoo on my IMac. There must be a way to let all the devices know that an email was read on another device. Any suggestions??

I am currently seeing this issue on multiple devices at work. All the devices that are experiencing this issue receive at least a hundred emails a day. I do not think POP/IMAP will resolve this issue. It appears to be with how the phone caches mail information.

Solution (may be only short term for heavy mail users, don't know of permanent solution for these users): tap Edit, located in the top right corner of the inbox view, tap Mark All, select Mark as Read/Unread. If issue is resolved great, if not go to Settings, then Mail, Contacts, Calendars, tap the mail you are having issue with (let say Yahoo), then toggle off Mail on the next screen, force quit Mail app (by double clicking home button and swipe up (at least in iOS 7, 8, 9). Toggle on Mail in Settings.
