This forum post (linked from Xlr8yourmac.com) by Epic VP Mark Rein indicates that the Mac Demo of UT2003 may be released this week:

Ryan Gordon let me know this morning that he has sent a version of the Macintosh UT2003 demo to Macsoft that is ready for large scale testing in the hands of Mac users everywhere. Macsoft will be doing some testing on this and creating an installer for it but hopefully this week the Mac demo of UT2003 will be released. Once the demo is out Macsoft will be collecting bug reports and feeding them back to us so we can promptly fix them and finish the game for retail release.

You will definitely want to update to OS 10.2.5 to take advantage of the latest Mac OpenGL code - especially if you're using an ATI graphics card as prior versions of OS 10.2 had performance issues with ATI cards when running UT2003.

Unbelievable forum.

Thank goodness moderators at macrumors moderate.

I was hoping for some explanation as to what exactly UT2003 was but all I read were off topic posts, cursing, and windows/mac bashing at the forum where this tidbit was originally taken from.

Heck, macrumors moderators and members are so good at keeping legitimate forum conversations, I'm going to have to go off to google, look up what UT2003 is, and write what I learned on here, just so this post doesn't seem off topic!

*pause*

Ah. I'm not a gamer. Anyone wondering what "UT" is? Unreal Tournament.

(the edit was to clarify where the bad posting was)

what are the minimum requirements?...i doubt it'll run on my machine...argh!

finally? what about unreal? quake 3 ? and unreal tournament? I have to say though, that epic didnt exactly cover themselves in glory with their previous forays into mac-land. Unreal was always patched months behind the pc version, such that you could never find a server with a similar version of the netcode....In the end, they 'lost' the final patch before it got to westlake, meaning mac-unreal was left one patch behind teh pc version.

iD always seemed to be the most mac friendly of the fps games publishers - epic are always late to the party, meaning that now we mac users get it, every one else is gearing up for doom3. still, its not as good as the original UT in my opinion - too 'quake' like.

Now lets just hope that the full-version release quickly follows ...

This is very exciting news! I was getting so sick of Quake 3 ;)

Try out Medal Of Honor: Spearhead

It's not quite out yet AFAIK but the demo is great and it reminds me so much of Counterstrike... well it is definitely a satisfying net game.

Also I heard the requirements are steep.

is it also based on the Quake engine?
Maybe, like MOHAA they could make it MP optimized....
With the current line up of Apple hardware I kinda think that MP optimization will be very welcome, maybe necessary. It would be pretty cruel to actually need a 800 MHz or faster G4 with 64 MB VRAM GeForce or Radeon, just to be able to play it, with the settings "miserable".
Meaning that if you have a Dual 1 Ghz or faster, you wouldn't be able to really enjoy the game with the grfx settings "high", because it would perform the same as the Single 1 Ghz....
Picture this:
minimal requirements: 800 Mhz G4, 256 MB SDRAM w/ 64 MB VRAM grfx card.
recommend requirements: 1.25 GHz G4 512 MB DDR RAM w/ 128 MB VRAM.
excellent requirements: 1.4 GHz PPC 970, 1024 MB DDR RAM w/ Radeon 9700 or better....

:)

Obviously a sad, sad, soul. Tellyawhat, holmes. You bring your M1... I'll bring my Redeemer.

Heh.

What ever happened to the carbon version of the original UT? The last they released, as far as I can tell, was the third preview release, which was by no means complete.
