I got about 50 messages today of e-mail not received. Someone used my address to send unsolicited bulk mail, some kind of virus attachment maybe, as if from an Aussie bank. Is there anything i can do to stop this?

Not sure how to stop it without canceling your email account and get a new one but you know how this happened, right? Chances are you clicked a link from an email that you received. Visiting bad sites that you know you shouldn't be at. Like anything pirated (music, movies etc.) There a ton of other ways too but these are the most popular.
