Subsidized vehicles?

Agreed. It's like buying a car but you can only tank it at Shell stations and use Shell oils etc on it.

Joshua.

Damn. That's actually not a bad idea... If Shell subsidized my Tahoe for, say, $10K off the price, I would gladly fill up at Shell stations exclusively for a few years. 12,000 miles per year @ 15 mpg = ~$4000 in fuel expenses. At some point, this may be the only way auto manufacturers can move the fuel inefficient vehicles. Then again, there's good arguments for these rigs to just "go away"...

okay, does anyone know if the activation in the UK will be the same as in the US? could it possibly be like the 1st gen activation?

what would stop me from getting a phone over there, bringing it back, and unlocking it (still using it on the att network, as im a customer there now - in contract w/unlimited medianet)?

Many people on the forums have mentioned the contract between the two is exclusive for five years. In that case, it's not tied to a particular generation of iPhone. If Apple tried to break the contract, then AT&T would've been able to sue them for breach of contract law--and rightfully so.
(I'm not a lawyer, but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night )
Verizon and Sprint would still have to agree to Apple's terms (e.g., keeping their store off the iPhone, etc.), which they might not be willing to do. AT&T was willing to do that; hence, they got the iPhone.

Esther

What mistake? Verizon has been beating AT&T's net adds since the iphone's launch and the LG Voyager has beaten the iphone in US numbers since its launch. Sprint's iphone clone is doing great in sales.

You're saying the Voyager's sales have been beating the iPhone in the US? Link please? I find this hard to believe, as I have rarely if ever seen a Voyager been used whereas I have seen hundreds of people with the iPhone.

I really hate AT&T and Apple's relationship due to this very fact. I mean, a cell phone is a cell phone. The law states that cell phones can be unlocked and AT&T usually unlock the phone for you after 3 months (except the almighty iPhone). I just don't find this reasonable and I cannot believe that there aren't any lawsuits against this act. i mean, they are forcing us to use their data roaming plans and that is just ridiculous.

For those many Americans that go... "WHY DO YOU HAVE TO UNLOCK YOUR iPHONE IF IT ONLY WORKS ON AT&T?"
Well, the answer is very simple. I travel a lot to Asia and Europe and they have a very popular service that is similar to our GOPHONE. It's called PAY-AS-YOU-GO and you can top up your credit amount at various vendors. Unlocking the phone allows you to have the benefit of using this service which doesn't require a signing of any contract and costs significantly less than that of AT&T's Data Roaming Fee.

I will now pray that Zibri will have a solution for the rest of the people in this world that travels.

Where is the law that states that cell phones can be unlocked?

The copyright office exemption --- only allows you a defence against DMCA lawsuits if you can write a unlocking software on your own for your own unlocking of your cell phone.

Do you see how narrow the exemption is?

They can still sue you under a million other laws --- which is how Tracfone managed to successfully sue unlockers after the exemption has taken place.

yeah, i know. but if its a pre order....you could order it now.. i don't get it.
Minimum purchase limit: 800 EUR so.. i guess you could buy 3 iphone-s .....
i guess it's a rip off

Didn't we already confirm this?

"Coming soon, AT&T will offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB."

From AT&T's own page, under "Current AT&T Customer."

Hell, if they subsidize, say a Honda Civic or a Toyota Prius... I'd do it. I don't need a car for commuting (one of the lucky ones), and making a weekend vehicle economically feasible would be interesting. But if they did it, they would be asking for higher gas rates to make up for the subsidy.

The only place in North America where the LG Voyager is sold --- is Verizon Wireless. And Verizon Wireless has sold 1.1 million LG Voyagers from its launch on Nov 21 2007 to April 11 2008.

http://english.etnews.co.kr/news/detail.html?id=200804110002

AT&T activated 900,000 iphones in the christmas quarter and announced an additional 500,000 activations in the third week of May. Just extrapolate the "slow months" quarters from Jan to April --- we will give AT&T 400,000 activations for the same 2008 period as the LG Voyager announcement.

Unless you allocate more than 700,000 iphones out of the total 900,000 iphones in the Christmas quarter to the period between Nov 21 to Dec 31 2007 --- then the LG Voyager would have beaten the iphone numbers.

Hi all,

the feed is a little confusing now:

Will we still be able to buy the new iPhone in the Apple-Store as we used to with the first generation, or do we have to sign some sort of contract right away? And what is the price ( I wouldn't care if it is looked).

Why shouldn't we be able to use the US UMTS network? When I travel to the US, I use my MDA III within the AT-T UMTS network which I can clearly identify because it is marked 3G.

Kind regards shortie

Can anybody confirm whether it'll be possible for non-American citizens to buy an unlocked iPhone?

Yea, you MUST have a U.S. Photo Issued I.D. so....as long as you have one of those and a social security number then you can get one in America

No unlocked iPhones from store in Brazil

Long time viewer and an unlocked iPhone user since Aug/07, this is my first post!!!!

iPhone 3G is to be launched in Brazil as well. Each of the major mobile service providers are negotiating individually with Apple. It has been mentioned in the media that the iPhone will only be sold with a plan at the provider store. There are no Apple Stores in Brazil runned by Apple.

There is a remaining question because Brazil is probably the only country where Mobile Companies are oblied to provide free unclock to any sold phone. There is a chance Brazilians will be able to get unlocked iPhones out of the shelf but always with a 12/24mo service plan. Just to get an idea of pricing, It has been said over the web that a Claro (service provider) research with possible iPhone buyers, mentioned an iPhone plan for 12Mo for USD299 (phone) + USD299 a month minimum pack. A iPhone without a plan would cost USD1.600!!!!

From AT&T's own page, under "Current AT&T Customer."

yes we did go thru this already.... and also we "went thru" the fact that this no-commitment doesn't mean squat and that the phone is still locked.

all it means is that you don't need to commit to the package they are offering you the iphone for at the 199/299 price, tag. it just means u still need to be teathered to AT&T but at whatever other AT&T plan you wish to chose.....
