I've heard it's possible, I have the setup but can anybody tell me how? Do I just use Redsn0w?

Yes, just use redsn0w (.9.9beta4) and follow the directions.

Is the beta the normal download, or do I have to download something special?

I just did, without updating the baseband. You can follow the instructions from this link... just update iTunes and backup your phone first.

OP: I used RedSn0w 0.9.9b5. Go to iclarified to tutorials.

i have also used iclarified's instruction to do the untethered jb my 3gs (old bootrom). it worked great.

if you have used tiny umbrella before, make sure to uncheck "Set host to Cydia on exit" before restoring. I made that mistake and couldnt figure out why i couldnt update to ios5.

    Worked for me.

The only advantage to having an older iPhone :)
