UnTHETERED 4.2.1 unlock on 3GS?

Hello everyone. I'm trying to help out a friend here with a
3GS 05.11.07 – MODEM FIRMWARE
NEW BOOTROM
VER – 4.0.

He currently has a THETERED version and he wants to know whether he can upgrade to 4.2.1 and also unlock the basband?

any help?

If his phone is on 4.0, why it is tethered? He just need to use Jailbreakme.com from safari and jailbreak it. He will then has an untethered jailbreak. All he needs to do then to install Ultrasn0w from Cydia to unlock his phone.
 
Yeah well he wants to upgrade to 4.2.1, question is if ultrsn0w will unlock he's baseband?
 
I'm in the same situation here man, my friend has an iPhone 3G 4.1, he want's to upgrade to 4.2.1 because the untethered jailbreak just came out, but he wants to know if the unlock is available and works, anyone know anything about this??
 
use TinyUmbrella to upgrade your firmware without upgrading the baseband? I don't know why you'd want 4.2.1 though if you're on a sturdy 4.0 unlock.
