Twice now watching a film -The Batman tonight - subtitles are being shown on screen. There is no setting within the HBO app to control this and all the Apple TV settings for this are off. I’ve toggled those settings on and back off and restarted the ATV but the subtitles persist and are apparently only on the HBO app and not the others, Netflix, Disney plus, etc. unless manually set. Anyone else seeing this on HBO?

It’s a bug in the Apple TV app for sure. Here is a link on how to turn them off:
in case that post goes away:

  1. Force close the HBO max app on Apple TV
  2. make sure your mobile app is updated
  3. log into the HBO max app on your mobile device
  4. watch something
  5. click the cc in the upper right corner and turn to off
  6. click x to save
  7. close out and launch Apple TV app
  8. open same show/movie you watched on mobile it shouldn’t show subtitles anymore
  9. now watch anything it should launch w off for subtitles

While in HBO…
Apple remote->Tap pad
Caption icon is there.
Thank you, thank you! It required starting the movie again and then tapping but that only brings up a progress bar but I saw those 2 icons above the bar at the far right. Navigated to the first one that looks like a tiny keyboard to me and that brought up all the caption options and I was able to turn them off there. Why they were on to begin with I don’t know, it’s only been just recently that I’ve run into this and only in HBO.

I was using the ATV remote when doing this. I also checked the remote function in control center on my phone and that actually has that little icon, whatever it is, right there on the screen and just tapping it turns captions off or on, even simpler. I checked for a possible HBO Max app update thinking it might possibly deal with this. There is an iOS App Store update but on the Apple TV App Store it shows my version as being the current. I updated the one on my phone anyway. Hopefully the ATV HBO app will get the same version soon. But your suggestion was extremely helpful! Thank you again.

Thank you but it’s even simpler than that. If you tap the remote, while the movie is playing, the progress bar will appear and at the far right just above it is a tiny icon that sets the caption controls for that feature. Thank you for the response!

The problem is that with the HBO Max app on Apple TV, you used to have to do all those steps to actually get the subtitles to stay off. I hope they’ve fixed it by now.

I’m assuming somehow that I did something to change the setting because I had never encountered this with other HBO features until just recently. With other ATV movies or shows swiping down from the top of that control pad brings down several things including caption options. That doesn’t work on the HBO ones though. However if you have an iPhone, using that remote app from control center gives that captions icon front and center making it easy to turn them off if they came back on with just a tap.

I started having the same problem in the Discovery+ app on one of my Apple TV's recently. Then yesterday, my second Apple TV started showing the same issue. The interesting thing is that the HBO and Discovery+ apps are supposed to be combined into a single app soon.

Will have to see if these same solutions work for Discovery+ because turning off the captions on each program is really annoying. Last night, I turned it off on the show I was watchiing and had to pause the video for a few minutes. When I started playing again, the captions came back on all by themselves!

I’ve been wondering a lot about this. My Apple TV settings have all captions off. Only in specific apps, such as Netflix, are they enabled, there are a lot of foreign language productions on Netflix. I’ve never had them on in the HBO app, never saw them before just recently. For now I’ll just use my phone’s remote app since it’s just one tap to turn them off if they pop up again. But this is strange.

On the Discovery Plus subreddit, there are a lot of people having the same problem. I tried the HBO steps for that, and unfortunately it didn't work.

Thanks, had a look and there was a recent post about this with no solution. Just now Bloomberg said they have confirmed that CNN+ will shutdown and become part of the new HBO/Discovery app. I hope they fix this.

I started seeing this on Discovery+ like a little over a week ago, annoying…
Wonder how they will do a “combined” app as I do not subscribe to hbo…
And I wish there were a feedback function

We do subscribe to HBO through our Fios tv service so we get HBO Max but want nothing to do with Discovery+ unless something more appealing than what is available now is offered, but probably not even then. This will be very interesting. If these streaming services continue on this current trajectory I can see going back to basic cable one day in the future. Costs are getting out of hand, “cut the cord” and pay more money than before.

Well for me, I cut it down from 80-90 for fios tv to $27 which includes the ad-free part, but we are of course all different in our needs

Looking at many recent articles about Netflix and the others it appears that many of these services will at least offer an ad supported option or possibly switching to ad supported only. Seems none of these services are doing very well with the subscription only option. I think eventually what we’ll be left with will resemble a traditional cable service. The services - Netffilx, Hulu, Paramount+ - will just become ad supported channels over your internet connection. Nobody has actually “cut the cord” unless they’re using a cell network for such a connection.

We’ve looked at all these services and for almost all there are one or two specific offerings that we have any interest in so essentially we’d pay a subscription fee for each show we watch. HBO and Disney plus are the only slam dunks for us and worth a subscription. An ad supported channel carried by a provider - Fios, Comcast, Directv or some version of those companies makes more sense.
