I have the Apple USB-C to Lightning cable, and it's much thicker and less flimsy than the USB-A one. It's still expensive, but at least the build quality appears to be better. Would rather buy from Anker, though.
It is the only Apple cable I am having pad luck with - I have the 2m version which is even more expensive, and first I los it an the charger while traveling in Italy, and could not find USB C cables/chargers *anywhere* until we made it back to Rome. Then the new one has stopped working 6 months later...

It's funny because people keep complaining about the regular Apple Lightning cables, and those have lasted for years for me, no problems.

Sometimes I'm amazed at how poorly people treat their stuff because the number of broken Apple device complaints I see are ridiculous compared to my experiences. I truly don't see that iOS devices/cables are made much differently than the competition, and in the case of the phones themselves are probably built better. The original Lightning cable I got with my iPhone 5 is starting to get a little damaged at the Lightning end, but that's a 5+ year old cable and I can live with that.

Just seems like half the world has a broken screen on their iPhone and that it's not the first incident, and I wonder what they're doing to these things.

I'm with you on the screens, between cases and screen protectors, neither me nor my wife have ever had a cracked screen on any device.

However, the lightning cables are a different story. We don't treat them poorly at all, but we've gone through at least 5 cables over the years, all with the same issue -- the casing coming apart right near the lightning head and exposing the wires. The cables are still usable, but I wouldn't use them like that. I've bought a number of Anker cables since, and they've been great, and they haven't had the same issue. I also now have a few multiple-USB port Anker plugs, as well as the Anker wireless charging pad (the flat one, they have two different ones), and love it. I also have an Anker "lipstick" charger that they sent for free just for being a loyal customer (I had to be one of the first X number of people to respond to their promo email.) Point being, it's a really good company, and my first choice for cables, plugs, and similar accessories.

(This is not a commentary on the advertised product or manufacturer.)

First thing I have done with new non-braided cables is to use Plumber's GOOP around the plug and the cable to prevent wiring pulling loose when the plug is connected and disconnected repeatedly. This is especially helpful with the older 30-pin Apple connectors. Even with the cheaper braided cables, it might be a good idea to GOOP the connectors to the braided line - on each end.

The braided cable coverings make the cables stiffer, but they seem to last longer. I have not had any failures over the years.

The gauge of the wiring used for these cables is probably the same regardless of the manufacturer - tiny. Metals break when they are flexed repeatedly, so no cable should be considered a lifetime cable - unless it is left connected to a docking station.

The Anker braided cable is more than double the price of the non-braided cable advertised here on MacRumors.

I will never use a 3rd party Apple replica they don’t work overtime
Just get a renowed brand cable with Mfi certification and you automatically get better cables than Apple's.

Theirs are ridiculously bad, literally any other cable I have, even the cheap (but certified) ones I have last much longer.

There's only one exception and that is SyncWire or whatever they are called, but I got them for free and I only use them in the car, so the connector getting a loose contact is no problem as my phone is mounted securely without wiggling.

Anker has a fantastic 18 month no question asked warranty on their cables. Couldn’t recommend them enough, I love mine.

Real shame that Macrumors is placing Ads as 'news' in addition to the ads that already everywhere around the site... that will be next? a 'news ad' every day?

If you payed more than 2 bucks for a lightning cable you clearly overpaid. On aliexpress you can get those for $1.50 with free worldwide shipping. Period.
