Every time I download a zipped file, in the latest case a DVD zipped file, it downloads fine but when unzipping it seems to open it for a faction of a second... and then nothing. I re-installed Stuffit but that didn't help. I'm using OS X on my iMac.

You don't need StuffIt to extract zip files. Mac OS X will do that already. You might try uninstalling StuffIt and then unzip, to determine if it's a problem with StuffIt. It's also possible the zip file is corrupted.
Stuffit really kinda sucks anymore and is quickly becoming obsolete. It used to be the de-facto standard for Mac users, but no more.
It's especially not needed when OS X unzips on it's own, and there are other great programs out there like TheUnarchiver (free) and BetterZip.
