According to the blog's Taiwanese supply chain source, Apple's decision to use an M2 chip was not down to production issues at chipmaker TSMC, but was due to a combination of factors, including market conditions and inventory adjustment.
Sounds like coming soon. Too early for M3 thoughts.

If they can do 24 GB of RAM as upgrade, then they should at least increase the default RAM to 12 GB if not 16. With 8 GB the caching starts quite quickly which is also not good for the SSD.

For me the most important thing is to be able to connect TWO external displays without any hack. I don't need the internal display in this mode if I have to compromise. Please Apple, just allow it, I'm sure M1 and M2 can do that.

Massively disappointing if true. But it's noy beyond Apple to do something so stupid, especially as they must have a stockpile of M2 chips sitting around as people have stopped buying Macs.
There is nothing inferior about M2 SoC family usage. It’s likely the M2 Ultra is coming soon for Mac Studio and delayed Mac Pro. MBPs and Mac Minis are sellling well using the faster M2 Pro and M2 Max. Some of these thoughts came from iPad Pro reviews which isn’t running MacOS and people were saying don’t buy because its only somewhat faster. Gee how that misguided opinions. Also many are quite satisfied with 13” MBA performance which the 15” will duplicate. ;)

The forthcoming 15-inch MacBook Air will indeed be equipped with an M2 chip, not the M3 that Apple originally planned, claims news aggregator account "yeux1122" on the Korean Naver blog.

According to the blog's Taiwanese supply chain source, Apple's decision to use an M2 chip was not down to production issues at chipmaker TSMC, but was due to a combination of factors, including market conditions and inventory adjustment.

A previous report out of Korea earlier this month claimed that Apple temporarily halted production of its M2 series chips at the start of 2023 following a pronounced slump in global demand for MacBooks.

The suspension is said to have continued through February, after which production of M2 series chips resumed, but they were "only half the level of the previous year," said the Korean-language report at the time, quoting a person familiar with the matter.

Last week, an unreleased 15-inch MacBook Air with a processor "on par" with the M2 chip was spotted in App Store developer logs. The MacBook Air configuration had an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, just like the M2 chip, along with 8GB of RAM. The new Air was also listed with a display resolution equal to that of the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

It's unclear exactly when the 15-inch MacBook Air will be released, but it will likely be announced by WWDC, which begins June 5. The existing 13-inch MacBook Air with the M2 chip launched in July 2022 after being announced at WWDC a month earlier.

The release of an M3-powered Mac is expected to come at a later date, and will represent a transition to a 3-nanometer production process from the current 5-nanometer standard. The 3nm process, which is also being used in this year's iPhone 15 series, allows for significantly improved performance and more efficiency.

OP: do you know or have sources that say it might contain the multi Touch Bar of the 13”? Because than I want one.

Not yet released and people already feel entitled to an M3 in a rumored 15-inch Air. 🤷
People like you seem to overuse 'entitled'. I don't even want the machine so I'm entitled to keep my money as I am entitled to do, being the entitled person that I am.

And releasing a brand new machine with a 12 month old chip is daft, however you want to look at it. Performance in the M2 MBA was criticised for being barely a bump over the 2020 M1 chip it replaced & suffered from heavy throttling thanks to no fans to aid cooling. So those looking forward to a rumoured 15" MacBook will be a little bemused if Apple goes with the M2.

Most Mac centric sites always expected M2 all long to be used. Now fair point about fanless 13” M2 MBA, but that should be improved by the 15” larger chassis, as it can support better passive heat convection, but wouldn’t be shocked if they add a single fan instead to decrease weight. Like the ones used in the 24” iMacs. Apple/TMSC is likely directing their 3nm efforts to a A17 for iPhone 15 pro models. Even if the M3 Arrived October it would be 16 months. The WWDC at 12 months SoC cycle has never been achieved so very long odds with that thought.

M2 makes sense considering they will show an M2 generation Mac Pro at the same event. The headset is also rumored to run an M2.

Sounds more and more like we are getting an M3 event in the fall starting with a new 13” Air, iMac refresh and Mac mini. Gotta wonder if Apple will update the 15” to M3 as well… especially so soon after it’s initial release…

News aggregator accounts hah!
Readers want exclusives, so here's one:

2023 WWDC will be Tim Cook's last as CEO
as he wants to go out with a bang he's going to come on stage dressed as Lily Savage (RIP)
I'd laugh if he does the Scouser accent too lol

That M3 event is only a rumor, everything might stay M2 until 2024. The 24” iMacs could be M2 vs M2 Pro used in Mac Minis. People keep suggesting Apple would go for a M3 because it runs cooler, but as a 24” user they can go ahead and redesign the Soc CCA vs thermals to yield a superior product not something hand me down like.

They won’t release M3 chips until March Apple 2024 Spring Event. They missed the spring event this year but not next year with new OLED iPad’s and M3 MacBook Air’s. Apple Silicon Chips go on a 18-month cycle except for the iPhone 📱 which comes every 12 months to the T.
The 13” M2 MBA came out WWDC 2022. An 18-month cycle wound out the M3 MBA coming out Fall 2023

3nm Speculation:
TSMC N3 started last year, but if I got today's news right (only a German source for the moment: Computerbase), they expect mass product only in Q3. Which would be in time for the iPhone, but too late for any MacBook Air if they want to present it soon(ish). Also, N3E (the refined 3nm process) should start to really kick off end of the year, so maybe we'll see another iteration of anything with M2 relatively soon.

You know, they could do both. I realize 'choice' is a little foreign to many Mac users, but they could offer Air's with M1, M2, and M3 chips. Gasp! Maybe 13" with M1 and M2, like now, and 15" with M2 and M3? Then people could decide what they need, and are willing to pay for, themselves.

They could but it’s a lot easier to ship all new MBA models with same SoC for production efficiency. This still selling M1 while M2 is shipping seems tied to so much parts stock they retained. Thst could go in the near future from store.

I guess it depends on what you want. The weight of the Pro is “compromised“ but I’m not sure if that’s going to be a big factor with a larger laptop. I don’t think the average user is going to pay an extra $500 for a mini LED screen. I think this is targeted that college students who want a little larger laptop. Right now we don’t know the price so I think that’s going to be the biggest factor.
YES. I don't any upgrade except the screen so the price can stay down. If they put some much in that it cost as much as a Pro then might as well get a Pro.

I think they will likely release the 15" MBA at $1299 and lower the current M2 MBA to $1099. While lowering the M1 MBA to $899.

With an Education Store 128GB M1 MBA that cost $699.

So you think they should do what? Scrap them?

That's a bummer. I thought M3 was already in production end of last year?

Now wait another year until the Air's have the M3?
Personally I am waiting for the M5! Goes back to the original Star Trek series when the M5 Computer was the "Ultimate Computer" that was powerful enough to run the entire ship by itself!!! (showing my age!)
